Why are we surprised that America is becoming more liberal?

Did we think generations of liberal education in public schools
and universities, plus years of liberal indoctrination from social media and news media would never show up in voting patterns?

Developed societies pretty much have always become more liberal in the history of humanity.
It's what humans do.
When society gets to a certain level of security and abundance, it starts to look at how to improve things and that's where liberalism comes in.
I mean it's not all bad. The United States was liberal as all hell in the late 18th century compared to the developed world.

I think we're also getting the words "liberal" confused with "leftist" ALOT. There are very few real liberals left.

You got the main culprits. Public education, universities and specifically communist professors the students think are cool, social media and let's not forget the glue. Cell phones.

I’m not so sure it’s even “liberal” anymore as it is batshite crazy with a healthy supporting dose of vengeful communism.

There are some liberals who aren’t leftists, but no leftists who aren’t liberal.

but it's only becoming more liberal in the American politics defined sense of the word "liberal". we're becoming less free, not more.

I see a good number who seem to be really stretching the bounds of what it means to be “liberal.”

Well we have an extreme version of liberalism due to our extreme SOL and development status.

In what ways?
Progressivism is illiberal.

Sure, but their ideas don’t have their roots in conservatism.

Right. Progressive ideals are the opposite of liberal ideals.
Back in the 70s, we called big spenders liberal.

I recently came across a video of Jonathan Gruber, one of Obama's architects on the ACA, calling Americans too stupid to even know what's in Obamacare. So I cross-referenced Tigerdroppings Jonathan Gruber and came across a TD thread in 2014. Guess who was in that thread sucking off Gruber as a national hero? Yep you guessed right, our very own SlowFlowPro who thinks he's a Stanford grad Don't go changing SFP, you're the gift that keeps on giving decade after decade. Our very own LOLCOW

Centralized planning is not a "liberal" philosophy, nor are war economies, censorship, corporatized information, thought crimes, codified racism and segregation or picking winners and losers through lobby armies.
Lyndon Johnson's Great Society provided a blueprint on how to create a contained and powerless population through government subsistence. We were a self-sufficient nation that built things and invented things. Our government - both parties - slowly traded that away and we went along for pointless white collar jobs and cheap electronics. Now the white collar jobs are being replaced with robotics, AI and indentured third world labor and the newer generations are more than happy to trade the risks of self-reliance for "security". Much as with the great society, that security will be poor, depressing and crime ridden and it will create generations of inescapable dependency. None of that is "liberal". It's pure evil.

I don't think too many Americans are surprised about the US becoming more liberal over the past 60-70 years. I think what has shocked a lot of sensible and clear thinking Americans is what unchecked liberalism has morphed into.....Cultural Marxism.
Most Americans didn't see this ^^^^ coming 30-40 years ago....it's here and cultural Marxism is the foundational ideology of the Fundamental Transformation of America.

Maybe we could define liberal first.
One way it seems great, the other sounds awful.
