No adequate power and water resources. These things use the power of cities. Neither are the existing buildings large enough or efficient enough for modern Advanced Technologies. The retro to a "Smart Building" would cost more than a new one. Data centers are very clean. Lots of air changes and a gazillion HEPA filters, much cleaner than an operating room. Very similar to a microelectronics manufacturing plant in build requirements.

There are lots of paper mills demolished over the last 25 years. tetThey used much water than a major data center does.

China is pushing the negative press on data centers because they realize the importance of winning the AI race. We had better wake up. If you don’t want data centers, quit using the internet.

Just listened to a podcast about how Europe regulated themselves out of trillions of dollars of AI investment and their economy is essentially doomed to collapse under the weight of their welfare state.
We have a percentage of Americans who would love to see the same thing happen here.

This makes me wonder why they aren't pursuing NW Alberta. There's a massive NG field there to tap into and the water table is only ~20 feet down. Yes, they would need to pipe the interwebz there, but that would seem to be a small price to pay for the savings on cooling and electricity. Heck, if they find the right spot they could even take advantage of some permafrost to keep things cool.

There is an area largely in rural areas south of where I live. A reservoir was going to be built there to supply drinking water to a large city to the west. But there was never a commitment to fund it and permitting became a problem. The project died.
It could be resurrected for the express purpose of supplying water for more than one data center. I just need to write my congressman about it. The area is so rural nobody would notice the data centers.

Yes. It’s common knowledge. First, we have had data centers for decades. They are used for handling websites like tigerdroppings, facebook, cnn etc. Second they are used for colocation. This is when a company decides it is better to lease server space from a data center than to manage its own servers. Third, they handle streaming of content for entertainment. And there are many other uses that I can’t even think of right now.
When we do searches, on sites like google, it takes a lot of computational power and uses a lot of energy. We would be building more data centers to meet this rising demand even if AI was not booming.
AI is radically increasing the demand. Already this morning I’ve done two AI searches. I wanted to know the implications of my wife’s sleep monitor score showing a low heart rate variability. I asked that and several followup questions. I also asked ChatGPT to give me a preliminary itinerary for a vacation I have upcoming.
With those two searches I was able to accomplish two small research projects in minutes that would have taken hours before AI. But in doing so, the amount of data center usage for my personal needs has increased exponentially.
I’m a small-time user, but imagine tens of millions of people doing this, plus people at work doing it, and you start to get an idea of why they are building data centers so rapidly. It is because you and I are using so much compute and storage that as fast as they get these data centers built they are leased out and profitable.
In short, they are not building data centers because they have a grand plan; they are building them for the same reason that they build mini-storages and ski boats - because people want them and are willing to pay for them.

The water use of data centers is largely a bullshite mass hysteria play. Golf courses use more water.
As for power, the infrastructure already exists nearby. It may need upgrades but the space and right of way is already there as opposed to zero out in the country.

I remember zuckerberg testifying before congress and he was asked the total number of interactions in a day facebook,instagram, whatsapp......and it was in the 100s of billions.
I said to the wife, how can that be there are only about six billion cellphones out there. She said, think about a phone conversation as a text conversation, a two minute phone call we probably interact 20 times. Now imagine billions of people texting hours a day, thats a lot of data.

That will be the next ploy by the chinese, they will say texting supresses your desire to be a transexual and suddenly all of America will stop texting, AI funding will dry up, and we will all be speaking Mandarin in a few decades.
