I’ve never stopped to ask why that was until just now. Anybody?

You probably remember them, like the Polish invented a screen door on submarines. Those kind of yo momma super low brow jokes but they were all about how dumb the Polish were.

I think it goes back to the German blitzkrieg of Poland at the start of WW II.

What about the joke with the eye chart when the polack is at the eye doctor and says “can I read it? I know the guy!”

I once heard that Polack jokes came from Jewish actors in theaters making fun of the indigenous Poles.

They were synonymous with Aggie jokes.

Probably just Cold War politics.

I remember Carson made a few references for his punchlines. So did Archie Bunker.

man i was a passionate Aggie joke teller as a kid with zero concept of what an Aggie even was, let alone that I would become one

I remember U.S. news reported on a lack of food in Poland in the early 80s. They'd show Polish grocery stores that were barely stocked.

The jokes sort of wrote themselves.

Because they are a bunch of dumb foreigners…like the I-talians, the Swedes, the Japs, the Messicans, the A-rabs, etc. You getting the picture, yet?

Poland had a pretty damn rough 20th century to be fair. Geographically sandwiched between the two most tyrannical, aggressive, and oppressive governments of the century was no place to be.

Do you know any American polish? They’re some of the most self centered obnoxious people out there. Not a lot of people truly like them. Most of them are very liberal on the east coast about what you perceive of Jews.

A significant percentage of the "intelligence" of Poland was deliberately wiped out by the Germans and Russians in WWII. All captured officers (thousands) were executed by the Germans. Any "educated" Polish person was executed. The ones that left the country, or escaped made significant contributions to the defeat of Germany. And then they were betrayed by the west and given to the Soviet Union. Polish "jokes" are simply reminders to the Polish their best and brightest were murdered. (I'm not Polish btw).

this may be so, but i think you may be mixing this up with the Katyn massacre in 1940 when the Soviets murdered over 22,000 Polish officers and members of the intellgentsia

I read one time that it goes way back. At one time in the Polish equivalent of our Congress, Poland had a rule that no piece of legislation could pass if even one member voted against it. I'm sure they changed that somewhere along the way.

The truth is, the Polish people as a whole are smart people. I don't enjoy saying the following, but they are certainly being better-educated these days than are Americans.

Their women tend to be attractive, too.

During WW2, the Polish reputedly threw sticks of dynamite at the hordes of attacking Germans. The Germans, caught the sticks, lit them, and threw them back.
