From NYT article: Whether or not you pay any attention to the lighting overhead, the lighting may be paying such close attention to you that privacy advocates are warning about the “terrifying” potential for misuse.

Gotta discuss the juicy stuff outside.

s. Obviously they like it when you buy bulbs that burn out in less than a year, as opposed to 10-20 years with an LED

You should tell that to my hallway bulbs that I just replaced after replacing them about a year ago. These were Phillips LED I got from Lowe’s.

It pisses me off. I bought a shite ton of incandescent light bulbs and have been marking them up a lot and selling them. Now my entire market is going to hell in a handbasket

LED will not save 75% on your power bill. HVAC is the largest portion of power usage 60-70%. Appliances next. 60W incandescent is like 17W in a LED. Which is close to a 75% savings but only a small portion of total usage.

Called rough service incandescents and they've always been available. Uneducated consumers are the problem, as usual.

Rough service bulbs are specifically designed to last against vibrations. You're right that they would solve a lot of problems, but I stand by my original point.

LED's are better in every way that the old incandescents. I mean it's not a huge deal that I'm going to cry over, but we should encourage people to switch to LED's.

Fast food joints help drive up obesity rates, which cause insane numbers of health issues and drive up costs on the rest of us.

We should get rid of those too, right?

They will save you about 75% on your light bill, perform just as well and last longer.

The only people pushing this were the companies that make the bulbs. Obviously they like it when you buy bulbs that burn out in less than a year, as opposed to 10-20 years with an LED

This is what the LED sellers say but isn't true. None of my LEDs have lasted any longer than regular bulbs and given that they cost a ton more than incandescents, the overall cost is significantly higher.

To me, it was a bad omen when the government wanted to dictate so much control over your life that they even wanted control over what kinds of lightbulbs you use. Hard to say you live in a free country when the government won’t even let you freely choose your lightbulbs! Good for Trump taking a small step to restore freedom in America!

We switched from incandescent to led, now back to incandescent. We just don’t like the cold, lifeless, bluish light in the house. We also like to dim. I think leds last longer but not significantly so, and the dud rate is much higher so you end up spending just as much. Our bills really never changed since we keep everything as low on wattage as we can.

I like having the option, since we use all three types in various areas of our home.

Compact fluorescents were a horrible scam

But LEDs are awesome and 1000x better than incandescent bulbs

I’m always all for the market deciding

BUT rewarding landlords who build new apt buildings and hotels that go led. well I’m all for it as it’s gonna save everyone money in the long run.

They come in a wide variety of color temperature, though you may have to go to a big box store (Lowes, Home Depot, etc) to see the full range. Ii started by using the cooler lights in the kitchen, utility room, etcetera and the warmer ones in living areas.

Now, I use the Philips Ambiance lights almost exclusively, because the Hue app lets you adjust both the intensity (dim) and the color temperature, including voice command.

“Computer, dim the Family Room by 50% and increase color temperature by 25%.”
