What is your opinion of Data Centers?

What are the biggest pros and cons?
I believe regardless of what we (USA) do, China, Russia, etc will continue with their Data Centers.

I finance power producing assets so my bank account is a big fan.

I agree, build them, tax them, invest in them. The last thing we want to do is get behind in AI.

Tax them? They get billions in tax abatements and if they leave before the agreement...the taxpayers are on the hook. Council members who approve of these data centers also sign NDA's.

They are pretty much a national security necessity at this point.

I believe they are necessary but temporary. As technology develops better alternatives will arrive

They are coming no mater what, may as well embrace it and figure out how to adequately manage them.

Cool with me.

Data centers and AI in general are a net positive for society.

This is no different than any business getting tax breaks.
But the employees pay taxes to community by buying stuff. And the businesses they buy stuff from have to buy more stuff to restock and pay taxes. The tax breaks are for the data center.
Most cities give tax breaks to Costco. But look at how much tax comes from the ripple effect. Trucks buy fuel and pay tax. Employees buy houses and cars and all things needed to live and pay tax. Equipment is needed and taxed. Then the ripple effect.
Its the world we live in, all smart business will factor in tax breaks offered by cities and other factors.
80% of something is better than 100% of nothing, tax wise.

Do you mean "what is my opinion of the 'cloud' ?" That's what data centers are.

There is the bottom line. It's the same with Bio Warfare and God-only-knows what else AI will come up with. Given the Human psyche, mass calamity is inevitable. Minus help from 'Above'. Which I assume we'll get when we learn our last lesson.

As Trump said, they should provide their own power or otherwise make sure they don't cause a power rate increase to the people living in the area.
Other than that, they bring quite a few jobs and taxes to the community.

One of the poorest counties in Alabama has been fighting the only visible growth in their community. All the promises by the black democrats, that visit Selma once a year for photo ops, and pretend to march through Lowndes County on their way to Montgomery hasn't come true. I just don't understand why they would be against it.

I recall recently Anthropic, having to build another method to store source (instead of github) because of performance. At the beginning of the year, a couple of thousand changes were committed each day.
Today, almost 100k / day changes are committed. This kind productivity was only dreamed of in science fiction at the beginning of this century, only 26 years ago.

This. There are a shitload of lies about the data centers. One of which the water usage. One way to cut down on it is to require the data centers to use closed loop and or liquid to chip cooling which will be more costly on the front end but reduces the water consumption by up to 70%.
If politicians had souls and brains then these data centers should be a no brainer. You approach it in a manner that the only way they can build is for it to benefit the local populous. This means, of course, tax revenue to the local cities and towns(which will happen anyways), build in within the deals of the data center that they not only generate their own power but enough to push back to the grid lowing the electrical cost for the locals, hire locals, etc. etc.

I'm fine with it, but I would prefer they pull electricity from the grid and not throw temporary generators at the fenceline. Less noise, pollution, etc. that way.
Saying this knowing that our grid needs the scale the frick up, which means we need the turbines faster than 5-6 years out. Use this as an opportunity to modernize.
