Do you get to choose what type of work you do?
Do you get a paycheck?
Can you leave the house when you want?
Can you go to the market whenever you want?
Can you choose how many children you have?

Is daily life 100% scripted by the government?

People in NK have a black market in SK videos. They smuggle SK TV shows. This is not propaganda stuff, it's entertainment shows. So, the people in NK know what life is like south of the DMZ.
They want it.

Well, here is a fun game to play. Look at state issued pictures (or any really) from North Korea. Then, see if you can find an HVAC registers (grilles, vents, etc for you lay types)

There is a really cool one of Eric Schmidt (Former Google CEO) inside wearing a goddamn goose down parka.

Hint: They dont have HVAC in state buildings. Now, think about that. If the gubmint of a totalitarian state doesnt have HVAC how do you think the common man in North Korea is doing?

We should ask Parmen when he's back from his vacation in Pyongyang.

much like in china they are pretty much indentured servants

freedom, what there is of it, is only through military service.

most sons and daughters will do the same jobs as their parents did

there is little to no free decisions as far as career paths and schooling

Spoiler alert: it's bliss.

Lines for transportation and basic necessities can span for hours. Here, a long queue forms for a bus in Pyongyang.

North Korea has faced a dire food crisis over the past two decades, the ongoing impact of which is still visible on North Korean citizens.

>

Chronic shortages of food has made the population look food any where they can find it, including by collecting grass from parks.

Most agricultural production in North Korea has not been mechanized, meaning farmers are highly reliant on animals for a majority of their activities.

Dubbed "The Worst Building in the History of Mankind" and the "Hotel Of Doom", the yet-to-be-completed Ryugyong Hotel dominates the Pyongyang skyline.

While education is hypothetically universal and mandated in North Korea, most farms are dependent on child labor.

Incredible fact.
Prior to WWII, per capita GDP, income, and quality of life was higher in the North than the South.

The best is the morning music that awakes North Koreans. It is literally the most creepy music imaginable:

Here is the real question. What does NK export? Does NK drill for its own oil? If NK has to import oil how do they pay for it? Trade nuclear secrets to Iran for Iranian oil?

Man, it's so hard to know because they are so isolated and the government is so repressive and secretive. Safe to say, however, that they probably keep track of carbs in their diet for the exact opposite reason that Americans keep track of carbs, if they even know what carbs are.

Not uncommon overseas. I went to a modern highrise office building in Hyderabad that had no AC, and it was over 100F when I was there. The cafeteria was on the top floor and was open air - roof over it, but open to the outside.

Also no elevators.
