Yup. I'd meet clerks at gas stations, yes, gas stations, who were slamming Reagan because he deregulated oil.

What happened was once Reagan removed the handcuffs, the price could fluctuate with supply and demand. The oil companies produced more oil when the price rose but then the prices crashed when oil got down to around $8 a barrel.

J Bennett Johnston, Russell Long and Edwin Edwards made the state a Democratic stronghold. Buddy Roemer getting elected signaled a change was coming but at that time it seemed unlikely. There was not a Republican Senator elected in the state for over 100 years until 2005

Theres just a segment of people in La. that firmly believe in the concept of "let the good times roll". They love them some free stuff

I like the Cajun people (even Couyon Angelle), but they gave us 4 terms of that crook.

Cajuns had a STRONG distrust of New Orleans candidates. Lots of corruption in N.O. and a very large mafia. Some of those Edwin Ewards campaigns were against a N.O. candidate.

18 to 21 nationwide drinking age has really been an atrocious policy for innumerable reasons.

Regan depressed the price of oil in order to bankrupt the soviet union and by doing so bankrupted south louisiana oilfield companies.

Blue collar workers voted Democrat back then. Sadly, the Democratic party no longer were like JFK. Times were changing and it took the workers a while to realize that and not automatically pull the Democrat lever.

The whole country shifted Democrat. I am sure there is more to it in certain regions but it would have been almost impossible not to a shift towards Democrats given the 1984 landslide.

The oil price collapse put a lot of people making higher than union scale out of work. plus a few plant closures near Lake Charles. Also Reagan stopped the Feds purchase of rice to give away to foreign nations. Lots of rice farmer went bankrupt as a result. That affected SW LA more than the oil

Acadiana used to be heavy Democrat due to the Huey Long legacy. It’s still there (see JBE), but the effect has weakened considerably.

It was heavy Democrat in the SOUTH due Reconstruction. The GOP state convention was still held in a living room during this time. It had zero to do with Huey. Texas was still very much an FDR Democrat state until Reagan.

He got Saudi Arabia to go along with pumping more oil to collapse the price to bankrupt Russia

Louisiana was democrat for a long long time. The move to Republican is relatively new.

News flash: a lot of Louisiana politicians still hold on to their democrat beliefs and are only “Republican” because it’s the only way they can get elected and stay in power.

A) Much of those were the old dixie-crats that still included 'Yellow Dog Democrats' who would vote for any Democratic candidate, regardless of the person or their ideals, and

B) Many of the blue parishes fall under New Orleans, and democrats tend to do better in big cities.

The actual original Cajun areas are not west of Lafayette at all. The area was mostly of German descent until WWII when refineries and chemical plants were built near Lake Charles. As a rule, Cajuns lived on small farms or hunted/trapped except for the minority who once owned large sugar plantations. It is a fact that under French rule, immigrants were mostly from Germany as farmers

Avoyelles Parish was settled by French veterans under Napoleon who served in his Egyptian campaign so technically not Cajun. Coastal areas especially Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes are primarily Houmas Indians who adopted French names and say they are Cajun so they could go to white schools during Jim Crow.
