Walgreens is one of the latest companies to be struck down by the challenges of inflation. American families and company owners are all facing a similar fate. Here’s what happened.

The spokesperson for Walgreens has announced the company’s plan to close almost 700 branches throughout the country because of inflation costs.

Wow, Rite-Aid is pretty much packing up shop here. I thought pharmacies printed money.

Wasn't this announced a couple months ago?

I recall the reason is because they overbuilt and all the pharmacies were building across the street from each other, and Walgreen's is the first one to say Uncle and start pulling back.

IIRC, Rite Aid in particular got bent over with the opiate lawsuits.

I want to say they got accused of being a pill mill for those scrips.

I'm sure Kamala's price controls would fix this!

The Walgreens that is closest to me was really good, but over the last couple of years the pharmacy started to suck badly. They were making mistakes all of the time with our prescriptions. We finally got fed up with them and moved our stuff to a mom and pop place and have thusfar have had no issues with them.

I miss K&B though. In one stop you could get your medication, get a gallon of ice cream, and a six pack of nasty, cheap-arse beer.

I dont know if it is inflation but Walgreens and CVS SUCK at filling prescriptions. Drop one off and expect to wait a minimum of 45 minutes.

Where my local pharmacist gets me in and out in about 5 minutes. His hours arent what the big chains are so I only use them for emergencies. If I can wait till Brian opens I will wait.

And Brian is an Auburn guy but I dont hold it against him.

They’re setup to fail.

Wags doesn’t give you enough hours of personnel to work it adequately so everyone is doing the job of multiple people. And you get so behind, there is no reason to work super hard bc you won’t ever get caught up

Plus they don’t give raises and will cut your hours of the help they do give you so the trained people end up leaving bc they have bills to pay and the vicious cycle of hiring people and attempting to retrain them goes on and on

It’s such a shitshow and maybe the most demoralizing soul crushing place to work

People are fricking arseholes and they’re so mean and nasty.

Walmart and Amazon (maybe a local pharmacy) will soon be our only choices.

Walgreens is shutting down stores that are underperforming.

While inflation might be one factor in the underperformance, as is organized retail theft, there are many other factors at play like location, market saturation and the overall business model.

The walgreens at the corner of Airline and Greenwell is empty with the lights on.
I pass it every morning at 4:30 AM on the way back from work from the construction job and its' emptiness is jarring.

When walgreens was first re building out and putting a new store on just about every corner I told people that this company is overbuilding way too much.
