I'm not keen on that, though it's looking inevitable. I have prepared accordingly.

There are questions you should ask yourself... Do you have a CBRN mask for every family member? Potassium iodide tablets? How are your food stores? Do you have a source to procure water and the means to purify it? Is everyone in your home proficient with firearms? On those firearms, do you have backup optics in case your red dots get fried by EMP? How's your ammo supply? Do you have a home defense plan and a neighborhood defense watch? What are the resources in your area and how can you take advantage of them? Are you prepared for life after the potential of widespread EMPs that may render all electronics including any modern vehicle completely useless? Can you catch fish? Hunt? Have a green thumb and a garden? How is your foraging knowledge?

People think preppers are crazy. I live a normal life like anyone else, but I look around and see the fragility of civilization. Combine the human condition with inherent tribalism and the mere possession of 50-megaton nuclear warheads, and you can see why there's potential for everything to instantly change in a very blinding flash. Outside of a direct hit, my household and family are built to sustain long term. Even if we have to bug out, we are built to sustain long term.

There won't be many people left a year after a nuclear war. Government and private analysts have carried out studies that estimate up to 90% of the US population remaining after an EMP will die of starvation within 12 months. If you assume 50-100M people will die when the high value targets are struck in the US, that leaves 250-300M people, and after a year that could dwindle as low as 25-30M. That's a lot less people and there will be plenty more resources for them if they can just survive.

Invest just a little money every month into a long term plan, and be prepared to survive 12-14 months in the new world, and you'll be ok. I strongly recommend this to everyone I know.
