Hard to find fault with this.

Would it be presumptuous of me to assume you're against such raises? (What about for the military?)

I'm not opposed to raises based on inflation, and most certainly not against them for the military. I think if any company comes on board with a salary offer, they should maintain what that salary level means at a minimum.

If you haven't earned the right to keep your salary where it is from a dollar-value standpoint, you should be fired. Because if you didn't "earn" going from $100,000 per year to $101,563 (or whatever) per year because of 1.5% inflation, you should not have that job anyway.

The exception, of course, is when such increases are frozen due to constraints outside your control (like in your example).

on this board you get downvoted for talking about downvoting. It's like fight club nobody talks about the voting system.

The problem with running any government job like a business is success of employees can be tough to measure or artificial.

It sounds good on paper... Not sure if it will make the brain drain worse.

I would support this 100%, but I also wonder how government agencies would be able to compete if they reduce the benefits.

Yes, how will the DMV and social security office keep this stellar well qualified people.

People willingly accept lower pay in government positions than their private sector peers because of the better benefits.

People take those jobs because with their skill set and work attitude their private sector peers work drive throughs.

If/when they remove those, I don't see why any intelligent or ambitious person would ever work for the government.

I am sure all three of them that meet that category will be fine.

This seems like a good idea, but could also result in the unintended consequence of a massive brain drain in an already drained area.

Wait rewarding those who perform will perpetuate brain drain. Do you think the few that are intelligent and ambitious are delighted that their deadbeat mutant colleagues are treated the same as them comp wise?

The only way for your resume to make it through to get hired is if you copy the entire job posting and put it in your resume. If a Procurement professional is applying for a Contracting officer job and puts that they are a purchasing agent, when the job listing says procurement agent, their resume will not make it through the screening.

This happens in the private sector too. My GF was contracting with a big firm and they decided to turn her position full time with the firm instead of going through the contracting agency.

She still had to jump through the hoops and apply and interview and all that shite.

Her resume was screened out when she applied for the position she had already been working for the previous two years. The position that was created specifically for her. Where she helped write the job description.

Because the key words she used that meant the same thing didn't match the exact key words in the job description and the ctrl+F skipped her.

It always makes me wonder how many qualified candidates are bounced for various jobs every day because they didn't use the exact terminology from the job description.

You realize the government workforce is more than just these, right?

Again...the government employs engineers, scientists, accountant, doctors, etc

You missed my point entirely.

This is only half the answer. They need to plan to take the next step which would be to hire less people and pay hard working people competitive salaries. I have seen my interns run circles around government employees. There needs to be real steps in reducing government productivity and apathy amongst the rank and file.

DMV is a state agency... none of these rules will apply to local municipal/state agencies.

As others pointed out at the Federal level you have some skilled employees such as engineers, accountants, lawyers. If the bureaucratic decision makers don't have quality technical people under them they are going to get abused by consultants who take them for a ride.

I say this as a civil engineer in the consulting world. Federal agencies would be better off hiring quality engineers/accountants/IT workers in house, because in house employees would be more likely to act in the interest of the federal government and the American people, instead of relying on consultants.

It's a tough problem to solve because you don't have market forces to enforce discipline with government employees. Google and Amazon would be poor models for the government to follow IMO because they pay their skilled people really well. The federal government is not going to pay those kinds of wages, so making the internal environment more dog eat dog is probably just going to drive off some of the better people.

TLDR... Federal government employment system probably needs reform, but I am skeptical that this will actually work.

I am interested in working for NASA or the State Department. Could you help coach me on crafting resumes to not get pre-screened like I always do?
Shoot me an email on bryndenblackfish@yahoo.com and I’ll send you my resume.

It can be good and bad. What most don’t understand is to get a GS7 job off the street, you need to have a 4 yr degree. You have plenty of government workers that are great workers. Some agencies require the workers to produce a certain amount of work per year. Each agency is different and should be treated as such. I can agree that it is very hard to fire a worthless worker. As a government employee, I welcome some of these changes.
