I would support this 100%, but I also wonder how government agencies would be able to compete if they reduce the benefits.

People willingly accept lower pay in government positions than their private sector peers because of the better benefits.

If/when they remove those, I don't see why any intelligent or ambitious person would ever work for the government.

This seems like a good idea, but could also result in the unintended consequence of a massive brain drain in an already drained area.

I think the argument would be that with greater efficiency comes greater reward to the intelligent/ambitious.

Right now you are probably paying 4 people to do the job of 1. And that 1 is still probably the only one actually working while the other 3 coast. Solution? Fire the useless 3 and increase the pay of the lone good employee with the savings from not having to pay 4 people to do one job.

re: Trump getting rid of automatic raises for federal workers
I work very closely with several government agencies. There are a lot of useless government employees and they seemingly cannot be fired. That is a problem, no doubt. It should not, for example, take someone 9 months to approve a 2 page scope of work. But here I am, still waiting

But I have also had plenty of colleagues leave the private sector for the better benefits of the government. These people are generally the best in their respective offices, as well. Start removing those benefits, and those people are not working for the government.

Obviously the system is broken, the automatic raises, the hiring system, etc need to be fixed. But the government still needs to be able to offer something to remain competitive in the workforce. Removing the benefits doesn't seem like the best idea.

1 example (extreme I know).

I met an elderly gentleman at a gov agency. He and I talked for a bit and he was very proud of his service to the gov.

However, he told me clearly why he did it.

He's had three careers in three different agencies.

From 18-38: Career 1 with 20 years of service
From 38-58: Career 2 with 20 years of service
From 58-70s (I can't remember his exact age at the time): Career three with approaching 20 years of service.

His goal was to retire with 3 pensions.

I didn't have the heart to tell him that he likely won't live long enough to justify working for the gov for 60 years.

For some of them, the lure of 2 gov pensions is too tough to resist.

Have you heard about the four men who were bragging about how smart their dogs were?

One man was an engineer, the second man was an accountant, the third man was a chemist, and the fourth was a government worker.

To show off, the engineer called to his dog. "T-square, do your stuff." T-square trotted over to a desk, took out some paper and a pen, and promptly drew a circle, a square, and a triangle.

Everyone agreed that was pretty smart.

The accountant said his dog could do better. He called to his dog and said, "Spreadsheet, do your stuff." Spreadsheet went out into the kitchen and returned with a dozen cookies. He divided them into four equal piles of three cookies each.

Everyone agreed that was good.

The chemist said his dog could do better still. he called to his dog and said, "Measure, do your stuff." Measure got up, walked over to the fridge, took out a quart of milk, got a ten-ounce glass from the cupboard, and poured exactly eight ounces without spilling a drop.

Everyone agreed that was pretty impressive.

Then the three men turned to the government worker and said, "What can your dog do?"

The government worker called to his dog and said, "Coffee Break, do your stuff." Coffee Break jumped to his feet, ate the cookies, drank the milk, claimed he had injured his back while doing so, filed a grievance report for unsafe working conditions, put in for worker' compensation, and went home for the rest of the day on sick leave.

Years ago, either ABC or NBC did a segment on one of their nightly news shows about Civil Service workers and how it was nearly impossible to fire them. In the year this came out, there were something like 65,000 negative evaluations and out of the 65,000 only 3 were fired. 2 of the 3 were violent. the 3rd pissed in a coffee pot.

About 30 years ago, my father caught one of his civil servants in the break room firing about a 5 foot flame using an aerosol can and a lighter.

He gave him a formal reprimand.

He ended up having to go before a board to justify why the reprimand was appropriate.

re: Trump getting rid of automatic raises for federal workers
The DMV here in Nashville has an employee walk outside at 230pm every day and make an arbitrary "you are the last person we have time for today" decision even though they don't close until 430.

My son gets out of school at 2 and I couldn't get him there in time to apply for his permit.

They locked the doors and I watched as they were done with everyone well before 4.

So, it seems problematic to only reward "the best" but the current system rewards "the best" all the way down to the absolute worst.

I see your point.

Entertain this scenario, given what limited information we have today. Jim Comey awards his BEST agent in 2016, Peter Strzok, with a large bonus. Given what has come out recently, I could see that as problematic. I don't think I would be alone.

Gone would be the automatic reward of pay “step” increases of 3 percent to 5 percent which 99.7 percent of workers get, regardless of their performance.

I think my raise the last 2 years in a row was 2.5%.. And that was only because I scored a 4/5 on my employee review.

Sure would be nice to do nothing and get 5% guaranteed every year.

Yeah, I don't think folks in the public sector really understand that.

2. Once hired, you basically have to frick the boss's 10 year old daughter to get fired. And even then, you'll probably need to be counseled on it first.

Ha. My wife used to work for the Welfare department for the State of Louisiana (west Jeff branch). The only person who ever got fired in her 5 years there was a woman who everyday would come to work, leave at 10am and then go work at an adjacent popeyes while still on the clock. She was busted when her supervisor ordered from her at the drive thru during lunch one day.

Not to mention there's always some "well, x didn't pan out this year like we anticipated" or "well, our margins weren't what we were predicting" bull shite excuse. The govt doesn't do that.

This is fine and good but what is really broken is the EEO process. Currently and employee can submit a claim that the court deem totally baseless and incorrect but then use that claim as basis for claiming retaliation in the future.

I mean it literally encourages people who are looking to work the system to file a totally baseless claim just to get his supervisor for retaliation at the drop of a hat in the future.

By the way each one of these EEO cases costs several thousands of $ to process and there is no limit or real consequence to filing multiple times.

Well I'll be damned. If this is true trump did something I can agree with. Hope it's not a case of blind squirrel finally finding an acorn.

It happens in the private sector too. Fire minority. Minority gets mad. Minority goes to EEOC office and files a racism complaint.

If you end up having to lawyer up, a false claim can crush a small business owner. I watched it almost happen to two different friends.

It amuses me because it seems so childish.

If I think your post is fricked up, I tell you your post is fricked up.

Downvoting is like running out of the room and screaming to yourself.

Doesn't everyone have one of those? Look at my post above. Nothing controversial in it at all and still downvoted.
