This is old hat. Whats funny is the performance based pay systems are drastically better for the civil servant. I went from the equivalent step 1 to 10 in 3 years in a band that includes gs14/15. In the step system that Trump wants to replace it would have taken me over a decade.

You folks dont know what you are celebrating.

Rewarding the best and firing the worst....is going to come into major conflict vs. Affirmative Action and Diversity programs.

If this is truly done.

This reform idea works in theory but there is a reason practically all federal workers are on a standardized pay scale: they have due process rights under the constitution that private employees do not have. The courts have consistently ruled that most of the constitutional rights citizens have to protect them from government also apply to adverse actions the federal government takes against its employees.

Imagine the absurd amount of lawsuits that would come from merit based pay with minority and female federal workers claiming they were paid less than their white male counterparts.

Standardized pay is just something you have to accept if you are going to work in government. You give up the potential for very high earnings in exchange for job security, stability, and good benefits. Even the president works under a standardized pay scale. Sure there are lazy people that leach off the system, large private corporations have that too, but you also don't have taxpayer money paying 6 or 7 figure bonuses either. Imagine how political and corrupt a government bonus system could and would get. The absolute highest paid fed workers at GS-15 are making about 150k a year. Be glad as a taxpayer there is a cap on that.

Do you really want the next Democratic administration handing out 6 and 7 figure bonuses to political friends and used as bribes to get federal employees to write reports favorable to the administration?

I'm all for making the system better, but too often Republicans make laws that work great when Republicans are in charge but then totally backfire when Dems take over Washington.

Diversity programs huh? Dude, the only rampant preferential hiring in the fed is for Vets. We can literally get hired over someone more qualified. A university of phoenix grad Vet can get hired over a Harvard grad. And you are worried about some mythical diversity hiring?

The only person who ever got fired in her 5 years there was a woman who everyday would come to work, leave at 10am and then go work at an adjacent popeyes while still on the clock. She was busted when her supervisor ordered from her at the drive thru during lunch one day.
