Former President Donald J. Trump has spent much of the presidential campaign brainstorming new, and sometimes untested, ways to cut taxes. In the election’s final stretch, he raised the possibility of going even further: eliminating income taxes entirely.

During a Fox News segment on Monday, Mr. Trump took questions at a barbershop in the Bronx. When asked if the United States could potentially end all federal taxation, Mr. Trump said the country could return to the economic policies in the late 19th century, when there was no federal income tax.

“It had all tariffs — it didn’t have an income tax,” Mr. Trump said. “Now we have income taxes, and we have people that are dying. They’re paying tax, and they don’t have the money to pay the tax.”

In June, Mr. Trump floated the idea of replacing federal revenue from income taxes with money received from tariffs. Mr. Trump has not provided specific details of how that would work, and it is unclear if he wants to eliminate all federal taxes, including corporate income taxes and payroll taxes, or only end the individual income tax.

If any country can do this, the USA can.....and probably the only country.

The idea can be solid if implemented right....and the ONLY man that could that is DJT!

Would love to see the size of government chopped...you could probably get rid of 75% and never miss it, but those people are so entrenched in their jobs, it will never happen.

I'd like see income taxes replaced with a flat national sales tax. That way, the illegals are paying their way. That will never happen either...Congress' greatest power is the power to tax, and no one on the Right or the Left is giving that up.

Love him coloring outside the lines. Scares the hell out of career politicians. Unfortunately, the government is slow and fat. Every other industry has been asked to get more efficient. Yet government continues to grow head count and do less. I don’t know if it’s feasible or not, regardless it would take decades to implement with the urgency of our current government process.

flat national sales tax.

A value added tax.

My sainted grandfather used this term all the time for how to fix things - never understood the words, but I remembered them when the idea came into discussion a few decades ago.

Wish I'd been old enough to absorb more of that man's knowledge.

That won't happen. I am hopefully he fixes taxes on overtime. Tips? Sure. I won't hold my breath on either but a guy can dream right?
I just don't see with our deficit how taxes on income go away federally. I'm all for it, but I can't see it working without shifting.
Maybe I'm missing something

The income tax system is a garbage system conceived over 100 years ago.

There are better systems that will bring in as much revenue with nearly zero regulatory burden on the citizenry.

Love when I'm representing small businesses in IRS tax audits and the agents start arguing about receipts for $50 office paintings. Seriously? We're fighting over that and you expect Joe blow incorporated to keep a receipt for a $50 office painting?
