This won't be good in attracting foreign students, but just a year ago didn't Trump say he wanted to see 600,000 Chinese students here? One policy wipes out the other.

WASHINGTON, Oct 6 (Reuters) - The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed that international students pay at least $70,000 in training fees if they want to work ?in the country, according to a government notice posted online on Wednesday, part of ?the Trump administration's wider crackdown on foreign visa holders.
Under the proposal, nonimmigrant students with F-1 visas would be required to pay $70,000 ?to a certified institution for on-the-job training, known as Optional Practical Training (OPT), and $30,000 for any additional work training.
DHS said the new rules were meant "to combat fraud, strengthen the integrity of the immigration system, and protect US workers."

President Donald Trump’s latest comments about allowing hundreds of thousands of Chinese international students into the United States have drawn criticism from some of the most outspoken members of the Republican Party.
Ahead of his meeting with South Korean President Lee Jae-myung at the White House on Monday, Trump told reporters that he plans to allow 600,000 Chinese students into the country — a figure more than double the number in the United States now.
“We’re going to get along good with China. I hear so many stories about ‘We’re not going to allow their students’” to come in, Trump said. “We’re going to allow, it’s very important, 600,000 students. It’s very important.”
It’s a sharp departure from an announcement Secretary of State Marco Rubio made in May, when he promised the United States would “aggressively revoke” visas for Chinese students and add more scrutiny to all future visa applications from China.

I’d estimate my finance classes in college were 33% chinese/korean, and they were so wealthy that this would be a drop in the bucket compared to how much a school like that costs. It’s a revenue grab and will do nothing to eliminate competition for white collar folk. Trump only cares about blue collar jobs apparently. Lock him up!

So what do you have against this?

A better question to ask might be what problem does this solve? Is it to make sure only wealthy students come here? I guess that might mean something by keeping the poors out. But it's not enough revenue to mean anything on the federal budget level. The numbers just aren't that meaningful one way or another.

Are you kidding me?!
I was a foreign student in college and I can tell you 99% certainty that charging a foreign student $70k for a “practical work” visa will send 99% of foreign students back to their home country after graduating!
This isn’t about making money out of them, it’s to prevent foreigners from taking American jobs! It was a pain in the arse as it was to get the visa to begin with!

So? What isn't? Make them pay extra to come here and use our system. If not, go back to China

This isn't true. Having been in universities all my adult life, it is clear that US students do not come to graduate STEM programs in the numbers we need to sustain the economy. Top international students coming and staying are what has given us the lead in IT technologies. If anything, we are attracting and retaining some of the smartest people in the world. This is a brain drain on many countries and I think we should continue to attract the best and brightest to come and stay.

This actually would be a good thing for example no NIL money for foreign athletes playing college sports. NIL would mean they are working and would have to pay also

No more foreigners until Americans are taken care of first.

People who actually put skin in the game (ie, pay their way) tend to be more honest, hard working, and less likely to be out committing crimes, protesting the host nations and planning terrorist attacks.

Yeah let’s just go back to educating Americans.

So, you like the staus quo.
Call it, "pay to play".

Neither is the estate tax. You for getting rid of that?

Americans are taken care of, first. This student population is in addition to the Americans in college. Our companies typically need more than what America alone produces.
Our economy is so large we need more than what America can produce, especially at the top. We effectively steal the best from around the world to make our companies (and economy, and all the jobs that creates for Americans) the best and leaders.

Seems like that same discussion said China was going to buy X billion of our soybeans. That didn't happen either. See the correlation now?

You guys are too far down in the weeds.
ICE identified 10K potential fraudulent cases involving student VISAs as a scam to get in the US and work, while pretending to be students.
Any kid who can afford international tuition and live abroad.....doesnt need to deliver pizza in his spare time. It wont have an impact on actual students.

What we should do is make it so that schools cannot charge foreign students a dime.
