I’ve read that the alcohol and for-profit prison industries have lobbied for this. I can see that. Alcohol consumption is way down pretty much nationwide.

Right now somewhere in the United States someone is on his way to a bar where he will spend most of the night getting as drunk as he possibly can. He will eventually go get in his car and drive home putting God knows how many people’s lives at risk because he is driving drunk. If he makes it home in one piece and managed not to kill himself or anyone else he will get out of the car walk into his house. His wife may not be to happy with him for laying out all night and coming home drunk so she will jump his arse and at some point he will start smacking her around. A scenario like that or similar will play out over and over all week because Alcohol is legal. People will have their lives totally ruined because they are drunks, someone they love and care about is a drunk, or was in the wrong place at the wrong time when they came into contact with a drunk. Yet these hypocrites politicians making laws will do absolutely nothing to make booze illegal. They will find a camera and scream about how pot is a gateway drug and we need to crack down on it. Then go home and pour themselves a drink and have to crawl to the bed later.
