This site’s status as an “anonymous” site combined with its unique blend of demographics and geography have resulted in it being what it is today. It has its fingers on the pulse of exactly all the things middle-aged white dudes in the suburbs want to say, but can’t.

As politics have taken over every facet of our lives, those who seek to root out and punish “wrong think” have similarly been given sway over every public facet of our lives. Voicing opinions contrary to the media narrative can now cost you your scholarship, your friends, your romantic partner, your job, etc.

As living without having blatantly wrong and disgusting ideas thrown in your face has gotten more difficult, and as more and more spaces within which it would be socially acceptable to voice opposition to those ideas have been taken away, monitored, and censored, TD becomes increasingly the safest place for folks to voice what they truly believe. TD is their only outlet where they can oppose what is happening without risking being fired, canceled, or otherwise harassed.

This is all probably true. I used to come for entertainment. It's not entertaining anymore or not as much.

It's just a long doom scroll.

In my daily life, none of this woke crap impacts me one bit, so I'm not going to waste my time getting artificially worked up over something that I never deal with.

No, not like reddit for a very important reason: posts counter to the prevailing opinions of the board can still be made and seen.

On reddit, what you can see is determined by upvotes and downvotes rather than most recent comments, so posts that go against the grain get downvoted quickly until they’re no longer visible. Unless you have the right ratio of upvotes to downvotes on your posts, they inhibit your ability to make more posts or comment on others’ posts.

So, those who repeat the board’s narrative can post as much as they want, with their posts remaining at the top, while those who run counter to that narrative are not allowed to post frequently and have their posts disappear.

In addition, reddit also employs bots to maintain the right ratio of upvotes/downvotes on controversial issues, and their mods are far far more vigilant at rooting out and banning “wrong think”ing posters.

So, no, TD is not at all like Reddit.
