This is actually a common conspiracy theory among leftists. But it is totally insane because that would me that Trump had this guy fire into a crowd knowing he would get smoked by secret service all while intentionally missing Trump and shooting some unlucky poor soul in the crowd

O, right. It makes perfect fricking sense that Trump would totally trust a 20 year old untrained dork with an AR-15 red dot and no magnification to shoot his ear and not his face from 145 yards away, in an attempt to gain "sympathy" and the kid was totally cool being in on the plan and knowing a sniper would turn his head into a fricking dugout with a round of .300 Win Mag.

It's not just the optics, it's barrel harmonics (on an off-the-rack AR), air and wind dynamics, bullet imperfections, load variance etc.
You can lock a rifle into a vice, bolt it to the roof (shooting platform), and at 100 yds you're not going to fire 5 shots and have 1 tiny hole. Even the best (and this wasn't it) rifle would have some shift and drift. If that drift is to the right, he takes it to the eye socket.
