I don’t care if the minimum is raised or not but the fact we have those in poverty should tell you something about our system.
Sweet child of Summer. Poverty has been the norm for 99% of human existence. The fact that some of the poorest souls in this country can still acquire shelter, electricity, water, food, and recreation should tell you something about the system.
The idea that the system is broken at this point is certainly true. But I’d be willing to bet you and I would take staggeringly different approaches to its repair.

And what you type shows that even broken it’s better than damn near the entire planet. Fundamental change should be looked at fearfully given the relative success of our current economic system in comparison to most.

Its pathetic we live in a country where half the population is so ignorant they believe doubling the minimum wage will double their buying power. In reality, their buying power will decrease because businesses will take advantage of the ignorance.

A $100/cell phone plan will suddenly be $220 a month. A $150/ month utility bill will suddenly be $340. Goods and services wont just be doubled, but increased by 60-70% because smart businesses will see an opportunity to manipulate the market.

The big corporations will be able increase their market share due to small businesses not being able to compete. Eventually the big corporations will be able to increase their prices more than 60-70% increase because they will essentially have a monopoly.

So in 5 years the people who are working entry level jobs will have much less buying power then they do now. Unfortunately, they will still be too stupid to understand the government screwed them once again.

There's no MW in Singapore. They believe in increasing the skills of the unemployed, etc. as a solution.

You think welfare use is bad now? Lets see what happens when companies can pay whatever minimum they want to workers.

There would be more jobs, less illegal labor working under the table, and more opportunity overall.

And that is my point, other than the over-the-phone tech help centers, those jobs aren't going to be shipped overseas.

They only have a few choices. Cut your staff, pass it on to the consumer , or fold up and close the doors for good and let everyone go. After this COVID-19 shite it will most likely be the third option. Now China takes over completely and the democrats are happy , that is until they figure out they are no longer needed and China no longer needs to hide the fact that they were taking the United States over because it’s already been completed. The money will stop going to these crooked politicians and when they begin to cause a problem for China they will quietly be eliminated one by one. Welcome to communism.

How the frick do grocery stores, fast food chains, gas stations, and most (state) government offices stay open, stocked, and/or available at a $15 minimum wage workers?

The big chains are smart and will figure out a way, but it will cost jobs. My neighborhood Walmart has gone from 4 self-scan checkouts to 12-15. I can now go in my McDonalds and get a drink without interacting with a human being at all. Automation will just increase.

I know this used to be true in Singapore, and may still be. If you had two kids, everything was paid for by the government. Schooling including college, health care, and if you needed government housing, that also. But starting with the third kid, you paid for everything...housing, health care, education. You got no assistance at all for a 3rd kid. Government housing was a maximum occupancy of four. The only people who had families of 5 or more were those that could afford to pay for them.

Singapore is my favorite city on earth. Anyone who has been there can speak to what an amazing city it is. Beautiful, incredibly modern, spotlessly clean, and crime free.

When was the last time federal minimum wage was increased, 2006? And each time before that the same argument is made - small business will die.

Well we haven't seen an increase since then but prices keep going up, so maybe it's not just wages that cause inflation.

The whole idea is increase minimum wage, let prices and business adjust, and then keep increasing it incrementally. The whole function of minimum wage is to keep businesses responding to inflation pushed by the fed reserve and globalization.

Otherwise big business will raise prices and continue to automate anyway, without any change to the pay

What work is Apple currently doing in the US which is paying less than $15/hr?

Likely not much by Apple itself but I would guess that plenty of suppliers for Apple pay minimum wage.

I think most of their suppliers are overseas and probably pay way less than US minimum wage. They also use child labor.

Most "enormous fast food chains" are actually franchised and owned locally. Granted, some of those are large franchises with 500+ stores, but in general most franchise owners are not that large. Chick-fil-A actually won't let anyone own more than 2 stores.
