But shouldn’t anyone in the US that has a 40/hr work week be able to at a minimum be able to pay for the basics such as food, shelter, and clothing?

They easily can. They just can't go out and get the best of everything. And probably still live at home or at least have a roommate.

Thank you mentioning that the secondary negative impacts of the $15/hour minimum wage. I have mentioned such to my family and friends, but the liberal media and liberal politicians has not once mentioned it. Employees who make $16-25 will expect a raise because less experienced or less capable employees will receive a substantial raise but not them.

They'll be shocked to go in Walmart or Target and there's only 5-10 humans working in the entire store at a given time.

Walmart and Target already pay $15 to start.

It's all part of the long game to destroy small businesses.

Fast food and clothing retailers are what I'm interested in (I'm trying to escape the latter - full disclosure).

Managers in fast food/mall clothing make like $15-17/hr, which is roughly double employee wages. How much are you going to pay people when they can demote themselves for 1000% less responsibility?

It’s going to be a combination of cutting labor force (automation where possible) price increases (not as much as you think because McDonalds knows they can’t sell a $20 hamburger), and focus on obtaining greater market share (if you need more money sell
More hamburgers)

And they will have to start paying more when minimum wage goes up.

my son moved to brooklyn for six months during his college gap year. the minimum wage there is $15/hr

he worked at a local juice bar, there were two employees and the owner. the owner told them that she could not afford to pay them $15/hr so she paid them $10/hr in cash instead and let them keep all of the tips

I bet somewhere at the corporate office of McDonald’s and every other big chain, someone has been tasked to create a fully functioning location that only requires two or three people per shift.

Sounds a lot like squeezing out the mom and pops and individual stores while favoring big corporations.

Hmmm.

When was the last time federal minimum wage was increased, 2006? And each time before that the same argument is made - small business will die.

Well we haven't seen an increase since then but prices keep going up, so maybe it's not just wages that cause inflation.

The whole idea is increase minimum wage, let prices and business adjust, and then keep increasing it incrementally. The whole function of minimum wage is to keep businesses responding to inflation pushed by the fed reserve and globalization.

Otherwise big business will raise prices and continue to automate anyway, without any change to the pay

Do you prefer unemployed to $10/hr?
Just curious.
$10/hr receives food stamps.
So does unemployed.

Which is the more preferable situation?

If an employee wants a job at $10/hr. It shouldnt be illegal.
It shouldnt become a black market job with no social security benefit.
It shouldnt be a job sent to mexico or china for $1.50/hr.

Small businesses account for half of the workforce in the country. The minimum wage increase benefits your fortune 500 as they are totally capable of handling more business with at the higher rate with the closure of small businesses.
