The poorest in the US can't find housing even as low-income units sit empty
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Mathew Davis, who lives in a homeless shelter in Austin, Texas, would love an apartment of his own. But with the little money he makes donating blood plasma, even a $450-a-month tiny home with no running water and a communal bathroom would be a stretch.
Meanwhile, over 4,500 units the city classifies as affordable — nearly 16% — sit empty.
"I don't make enough money really to afford anything," Davis, 49, said of the few hundred dollars he earns a month. "I just keep trying to swim uphill."
The poorest people in the U.S. face the most acute shortages of affordable homes. But the majority of low-income housing financed in recent years is for those earning 50% of an area's median income or above, according to a survey of state housing agencies.
Some cities are now seeing an uptick in vacancies as rents for these units approach market rates. The result: Apartments designated as affordable sit empty because the poorest of the poor cannot afford them.

Am I supposed to have sympathy for this man? There are enough “programs” in this country to provide for everyone on the backs of those of us who produce.

I cannot think of many reasons a 49 year old man would not be working if they cannot afford shelter. I see people who cannot walk working, people with severe metal handicaps working, people without limbs working, etc. He is just a lazy bum and people need to call people like that out, not give them sympathy.

Yes, he is a human. I'm not saying you have to take him in but we should take care of our fellow Americans when they can't.

What about when they simply refuse to take care of themselves? How dare some people be allowed to do nothing yet expect a portion of the fruits of MY labor? They get no sympathy for me.

I’m very tired of people thinking they have the right to spend my taxes so they can feel morally superior. Taking money from me to give to someone else is stealing.

I was a passenger in a major vehicle crash last year. I went through physical therapy and returned to work. Had to show up at work with a walker and then a walking boot for a while.
Meanwhile, this guy is like: "Brah, check out this uphill battle!"

He's choosing to live in the progressive wonderland that is Portland. The mental illness is a given.
That said, the high likelihood of his failure to pursue all avenues available to someone with an assumed mental condition still satisfies the statement.
