There are no good options, really.
Local news, WSJ, a few others, but they're all flawed.
Read everything on RCP for fairly decent balance. Imperfect, but hard to find a better way IMO.

That's quite a major difference between here and DU. We have some of our most liberal posters on this board who have been banned from DU because of not being farther left than Maoism.
And PT might be majority conservative but all voices are allowed.

I agree with OP.
Sure, you have to weed through things a bit, but you can almost always glean out accurate information here. Some of it is that there is a wider band of people aggregating and interpreting the data, and also get some boots-on-the-ground info.
It was from this site that I learned there was a run on toilet paper starting; and it was early. I hit the stores and got everything I'd need for a month, a couple days before things got bad. And though it wasn't "bad", there were others in line with the same stuff. You could see it coming.
That isn't feeding panic, it's reading the landscape.

Exactly. Ill give credit where it is due though. Posters find and post news stories here faster than you can find it on other collective news story sources (yahoo, twitter, etc). Just be sure to fact check the sites being posted.
As far as intellectual discussions are concerned though this site is void of them. Tigerdroppings is an echo chamber far removed from reality.

Truthfully though, there are numerous sane, thoughtful, and knowledgeable posters aboard that help make TD what you described. I particularly pay attention when potential severe or unusual weather threatens because there's some real pros making complex situations clear.
