WaPo has an article up about the "backup plan" that included keeping Bagram open. I still can't get around their paywall. Their site doesn't even give me the read only text mode or whatever anymore.

It seems Joe is scheduled to give "remarks" tomorrow at noon. That would likely be after the G7 meeting and within the 24 hour window the administration said he would take to make a decision on staying beyond August 31.

While they’ve played around with it, almost all indications show we’re leaving. I can only pray he reverses course, because that’s going to be really, really bad if he doesn’t.

Been a busy few days. My son (I shared in the thread earlier he blew over to Kabul 8/11) was back on Ft. Campbell Saturday and part of Sunday. He blew back out yesterday night. I was able to talk for a while and get a partial sitrep (non-classified portion) and they have been working their asses off in spite of the admin's incompetence.
There is an outside shot Biden comes out of this snatching "victory" from defeat. Be prepared for the press to start angling toward a 10,000s of thousands would have died instead of the 100s if it weren't for president Biden's leadership.

Afghans use Citizen-style public security app to dodge violence in Kabul

As the Taliban imposes its draconian rule in Kabul, residents of town are turning to a crowdsourced public security app to assist them dodge violence, checkpoints and different threats.
The app, referred to as “Ehtesab,” offers iPhone and Android customers real-time updates on emergencies within the metropolis of 4.4 million, which fell to the Taliban final week. It bears a robust resemblance to Citizen, the controversial public security app in style in US cities like New York and Los Angeles that additionally sends out security alerts to close by customers.
Ehtesab — which interprets to “accountability” in Dari and Pashto — first launched in March of 2020, however has gained elevated relevance in the course of the Taliban’s resurgence. The app’s fact-checkers comb via social media and user-submitted studies to confirm emergencies, then ship out notifications to customers who’re close by, 26-year-old founder and CEO Sara Wahedi instructed The Post.
Wahedi mentioned utilization has spiked in latest weeks because the Taliban have taken Kabul. Ehtesab’s 20 staffers, a lot of whom are ladies, have scrambled to maintain the app up and working whereas working from house to keep away from a possible Taliban crackdown.
“We’re specializing in the fast capability that we now have, which is to proceed our work in disaster mode,” mentioned Wahedi. “I’m simply hoping the app doesn’t shut down.”
On Monday, Ehtesab featured alerts a few lethal capturing on the gate of Kabul’s airport and site visitors congestion.
In order to keep away from attracting Taliban consideration, Ehtesab avoids straight referencing the Taliban in its safety alerts. Instead of explicitly writing that militants are threatening individuals at a roadblock, the app could as a substitute warn drivers that there’s a checkpoint resulting in a site visitors jam in a selected space, which may be framed as a non-political site visitors report.

It is a certainty that the US mass media will at some point praise Tough Guy Joe for making the best of the bad situation that Trump left in A-ghan. Absolute certainty.

Yeah he called as I was walking out of Sams with one of his little sisters. She damn near was in tears hearing his voice. We spoke for a long time funniest part is he was cleaning his bathroom in his dorm room the whole time. He said his roommate wasn't in country and he was tired of dirt. Was going to get it super clean then take a hot shower until Ft. Campbell couldn't supply any more hot water.

I would guess its at least 21 hours depending on if it was direct or connected through Germany. His medic give him some party favors to help him sleep.

Awe ... I can't imagine.
While I'm glad he was able to get home (and back) safely, why did they bring them home? As opposed to somewhere closer?? 21 hours here and then 21 back doesnt' almost seem worth it??
