SFP always spits out stats in these threads that crime was worse in the past. I don't know what to think. Even though it's a murder capital, Detroit is probably as good or better now compared to back then. I'm guessing San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland are way worse now. NYC is probably even. Not sure about Chicago and D.C. (I'm guessing they are worse now). ETA, NOLA has to be worse now.

I’d be fine with stop and frisk making a come back, automatic prison (not jail) for any theft conviction over $200, and any minor violent charge like assault. So, no, I won’t agree to your gotcha. We have third world problems with leftist first world approaches that have broken down over time.

I think SFP even admits crime is more pervasive in higher end areas.

You said "we need more prisons." You also said "You can’t go to your local mall, park, or movie theater at night" after admitting that was possible and safe back when incarceration rates were much lower.

I'm asking you what you believe prisons are accomplishing if you feel less safe out in your community today than you did when incarceration rates were much lower.

We still aren’t imprisoning enough. I’d advocate for whole prisons dedicated to thieves.

You just admitted that the more people we imprison, the less safe your community is. What are you hoping to accomplish by incarcerating more people? You think it will be different this time. Isn't that what proponents of communism say?

No, I didn’t. We aren’t going far enough. Three strikes laws. Stop and frisk. Prison expansion.

NO fricking way

NYC was a hellscape in the 70s and 80s

Nola is much better and has always has the violence crossing SES zones due to how the city is laid out

And you think if we just incarcerate more people, your community will become as safe as it was when we incarcerated dramatically fewer people? And you believe this despite your community becoming increasingly unsafe in conjunction with our ballooning incarceration rates?

It wouldn't shock me.

I thought about this after the last time you exchanged with me about it and I think a driver of that is the rising SES of the lower class, specifically their mobility.

In the 70s-80s, if you were poor you lived in your neighborhood and I'd imagine rarely left it. Now they can travel all over.

Not close to late 80s and early 90s. There is less population now, but for a few years New Orleans was over 300 murders per year with a peak of almost 450 in the early 90s. It's still the number one issue in the city and needs to be cleaned up big time.

We need more incarceration and less excuses and suicidal empathy. If that’s that the 70-90s where crime was more “confined” to liberal shitholes, then let’s go.

What's the difference, violent crime or any crime for that matter, is beyond comparing decades. It's all synonymous.

You can drive all over and there’s more knowledge on the criminal’s end to where $ and victims may be.

Interesting, didn't know that. Reading the OT makes an outsider feel like it was almost utopia 20-30 years ago and now even tourists are getting jacked in the Quarter.

Jeff Landry did New Orleans a solid and installed a permanent state trooper unit in the French Quarter which has seemingly helped. I think the AG’s office has also stepped in on some prosecution based on certain arrests.

LMAO! Not sure where you are, but I feel every bit as safe here now as I did 30 years ago.
