Did You Know:
The most recent US - Panama Treaty includes the right for the US to take action to keep the canal open if its neutrality is threatened
Like, for example, selling the canal operations to China
..Trump never does anything wildly, he just splashes things for people to pay attention to…

So what do ya’ll think about the Panama Canal?
I say we undertake the challenge of excavating a big, beautiful canal across our entire southern border from California to the Gulf of Mexico. A great big, tremendous canal like the world has never seen.
*I say this tongue in cheek because I know it wouldn't be worth the effort and there are literally rock mountains across parts of the border, but it would at least it would provide another border barrier, prevent tunneling, and we would control 100% of it and completely remove the need for ships traveling all the way down to the Panama Canal.

The treaty giving it up also included language to take it back if warranted.
Well… what are those conditions that warrant taking it back?

Torn? The Darien Gap has been a spigot that has allowed 10 million migrants to flow through it in just the last 4 years and the Panamanian Govt obviously knew about it and enabled it.
frick those motherfrickers.

You mean the United States Canal.

Some of the largest container ships don't even fit.
I thought they were making it bigger. Or at least the show I saw on either Discovery or National Geographic about building it bigger seemed to indicate that they were. Or maybe that was just a "what if" sort of thing.

The treaty requires that Panama alone operate the canal and that it always remain neutral. China and Panama seem to have struck a new bargain.
I was paying attention when this happened and I recall that the excuse Panama made was essentially that they were too stupid to operate the canal and needed to subcontract to China's better engineers. They did not explain why they couldn't subcontract to US engineers. China probably offered to do it for free just to get control.

China has had control over the canal for decades now. They moved in to “assist” Panama in the early 2000’s.

We built the damn thing. If Panama can’t a) keep adequate security around it and b) acquiesce to our wishes then take it back. With force if necessary. I’d rather have my tax dollars spent to conquer a key naval asset rather than Ukraine or Israel.

Trump is dead on with his thoughts about the Panama Canal. This has been a major issue for years and Trump is the only one with the guts to do something about it.

A MEXICAN canal-- it's unpossible given our current level of technology, and our level of diplomacy.
The environmental impact of such a project would be an irrecoverable blight on southern Mexico. What about the human toll, and existing animal migration patterns?

Without knowing the exact ins& outs of how Trump claims Panama is violating the treaty, this x1000 and it should be the only consideration.
FWIW, this is from the Wikipedia entry:
quote:
This first treaty is officially titled The Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal (Spanish: Tratado Concerniente a la Neutralidad Permanente y Funcionamiento del Canal de Panamá)[1] and is commonly known as the "Neutrality Treaty". Under this treaty, the U.S. retained the permanent right to defend the canal from any threat that might interfere with its continued neutral service to ships of all nations.

Leave it, it's a money pit and newer ships are too big to use it.
When it was built it served a strategic purpose, with the amount of naval bases we have in every ocean today it's not.
Trump needs to ignore the idiot who put this idea in his ear.
