Civilians knew the military had largely already pulled out of the area as well.

After potato told everyone “The Taliban won’t take over in 30 days.”

Your choices here are “People are stupid for listening to the Biden administration” or “The Biden administration is stupid and culpable here.” I don’t think either one helps you out.

Seems like a lot of flip flopping.

I'm not talking about how we handled the current situation. It's clearly a shite show.

Should we have maintained a military presence in Afghanistan?

We should have left our military in place and evacuated our people there first. We also should have secured war material and kept it under our control.

Do you disagree?

When you use quotes, usually that mean you are quoting someone. Didn't he say it wasn't inevitable?

And even if you go off those remarks, they were made in the past couple of weeks, weren't they? We've barely had any troops in Afghanistan for months now.

Yes, Biden and his team could have and should have handled this situation differently. All I'm saying is once you see most of the US military leave town months ago and you're still staying there (unless you are a diplomat/DoD employee), you've brought some of this situation upon yourself.

“Inevitable” means “at some point it WILL happen.” And he indicated “at some point” wasn’t going to be within the next month.

Telling people “don’t expect shocked this happened” is fricking rich considering the White House and our own military apparently got caught flat footed here.

The rush of civilians to the airport yesterday kinda showed that the average person on the ground around Kabul did not expect the city to fall so quickly

1. Your expectations for what our government and intelligence services know should far exceed what you expect the average civilian to know.

2. The rush had a lot to do with the sudden and secret evacuation of US troops from the country. The appearance is when the military realized the Taliban was advancing at a much faster pace, they just took off without warning to anyone who probably would have needed to know.

Wave this response off as inevitable all you want, but it's clear your expectations for competency on the part of our government has to be at rock bottom in order to get where you are. Which is pretty unfortunate.

The only thing we should have left there from the beginning is bomb damage

It is crazy that there were 10,000 US civilians in Kabul. They should have been sent home a month ago and the embassy closed.

Everyone wanted out!

Biden botched it.

The plan was to keep Air support and minimal ground support for intelligence and keep watch on Terrorist activities. Way less than 2500. We have more support in other Allied countries. Biden suggesting moving more troops in to fight was a lie

He was saying this didn't HAVE to be the outcome. Yeah he was WAY wrong in his confidence in the Afghan armed forces. That's probably the biggest blunder here. We put too much faith in them holding down the fort while we evacuated our remaining people rather than holding it down ourselves.

My point remains though that individuals have to bear some measure of responsibility for choosing to remain there when most of our armed forces had already left.

There was only like 6000 there working with NATO and 0 deaths in the last 18 moths so I am fine with that.

I think just about everyone was in agreement that it was past time to get out ,but the way it was done was ridiculously incompetent and indefensible. I have a hard time believing this Administration thought that the Afghan forces would hold. Anyone who has been there or is a veteran that has any connections to people who have been there and trained this force could have told you that. It was going to be a shitshow no matter who did the withdrawal, but leaving behind the equipment that we did and leaving American Personnel with no plans in place to get them out if this went sideways, which it did, is a frickup of epic proportions. Now the enemy is armed with not only small arms but equipment that our adversaries will certainly buy, reverse engineer, find flaws, and ways to defeat that equipment. Then the extremists from the entire Middle East will go into Afghanistan and regroup, now armed and will wage war on the West. This shitshow will have long lasting repercussions well past this Administration.

We should have removed all personnel amd equipment before even announcing we were leaving. Very easy when you still have control of the air fields. Get everyone out except a very small number of troops, then announce we are leaving and be out within a few days.

Yep.

People who are acting like this was handled well, and that criticizing it means you are a hypocrite who didn't want us out of Afghanistan, are simply ignoring how absolutely terribly this was handled.

The difference here is NONE OF THIS WOULD HAVE HAPPENED if Trump were in office. The only discussion about Afghanistan that we would be having is a discussion about how we're no longer there.
