While I’m totally against having a presence around the world so it keeps our armed forces in training for a time when a despotic leadership pops up that means to harm us I do have problems with utilizing our forces as police . Our positions in Germany , Japan , and a hundred other areas that have much smaller presence is good examples . 6-12 month full arse on in Afghanistan would have been the right call but they were restricted from the get go . If it was a disaster after 2 years, which it was , then new command on the ground was highly needed and those mountains there should have been leveled .

Agree with what you said, but

Our dumb asses set up bases in remote areas that can only be supplied and supported through air support..

While true, there really isn't much over there outside of the big cities like Kabul and Kandahar. Everything else is pretty remote.

I served over there in RC East from 2012-2013. All I have to say is that we, the US military, are a well trained, seasoned fighting force. We are not nation rebuilders or the world police, nor should we be.

The Taliban take-over was going to happen no matter if we withdrew 19 years ago or 19 years in the future.

The shitshow of how we withdrew and the way we left people stranded is what bothers me most about the current situation.

To answer the OP, NO.
We should have went in, kicked arse then immediately returned home and let Afghanistan put their country back together again.

I'm not talking about how we handled the current situation.
This is the issue at hand. Everyone knows we needed to end our involvement in Afghanistan. And it was horribly botched.

The military should have been the last to leave, out of Bagram.

This, the ceremonial handing over of Bagram to the Aghanis should have been someone throwing the keys out of the last C-130 that left the base.

No. frick them. America first. We spent a trillion dollars over there to wipe their asses for 20 years.

And I'll take it a step further, as a Trump supporter and grateful blue state to red state relocater--I don't think most of the people on this board would be so outraged about leaving Afghanistan if Trump were the president.

Yes. Close bases in Germany to balance it out.

It would be nice to have a base in that part of the world.

We should've kept an airbase there that could've provided air support b both militarily and logistical.

It should be in an area they won't frick with.

And we could have sorted the afghan military.

We hadn't had a combat death there in 18 months.

I understand both sides but we need a base over there, we had a base over there. I don't see the issue.

The question is “Should we have done so before giving anyone who wanted out the opportunity?”

Trump signed the exit deal last year with an exit deadline of March 31. Why the hell weren’t people getting out? Trump reduced the troops to about 2,500. That isn’t enough to occupy the country. Why weren’t people leaving?

The answer is that most people apparently didn’t think that the Afghani people and military would just give the country to the Taliban.

Correct answer ^^^^. The US should have occupied Bagram AFB for another year or two with enough men and equipment to deliver a devastating counter attack to any Taliban aggression…..but I’m just a civilian on the PT forum so what do I know.
