They likely started out by being rejected by some aspect of society they wanted to be a part of (mommy didn't hug them enough, didn't make the football team or cheerleading squad, etc) and instead of having the "well, that sucks but I'll just move on" attitude, they took it personally to the point of rejecting society right back.
That sort of internal poison expresses outwardly so that even if the person had hotness potential, it gets tainted and nasty.
