Ok let’s unpack this a little. 1. What qualifies as a “ship”? We build all of our own military ships. 2. What’s the type of ship China is building? What’s the quality? 3. If we’re talking military, their ships are no where near as advanced as ours. This is a little sensationalist to me.
Actually no. In terms of national defense, how do you move the tanks, ammo, helicopters, medical supplies, food, fuel, etc.
You need merchant vessels. This was highlighted during the first gulf war when we had to contract Russian ships and crews to supply the war effort.
Chinese built merchant vessels are not advanced but they have the ability to churn out thousands a year. With their ever expanding port purchases they now have logistic bases throughout the world with the ability to move cargo swiftly and efficiently.
The US has an aging and ever shrinking fleet and ever shrinking population of experienced mariners that if we went to war would probably have so many mechanical issues and accidents we’d leave our troops stranded and starving.

Let’s unpack.
At some point you just have to admit you have TDS.
Seriously, Trump consistently knows more than you fools.
quote:
In 2020, U.S. shipbuilders delivered a total of 608 vessels.
quote:
In 2021, U.S. shipbuilders delivered a total of 235 vessels.
quote:
According to a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, the Navy planned to deliver two Virginia-class submarines and three Arleigh Burke-class destroyers in fiscal year 2022. The actual deliveries were two Virginia-class submarines and one Arleigh Burke-class destroyer. This indicates that five ships were planned, but only three were delivered in that fiscal year.
quote:
The U.S. shipbuilding capacity is significantly smaller compared to global competitors, with the U.S. producing fewer than 10 ocean-going vessels in 2023, while China produced over 1,000.
quote:
These challenges highlight the need for strategic investments and policy measures to revitalize the U.S. shipbuilding industry and enhance its competitiveness on the global stage.

I mean, those numbers are certainly concerning.
There's a certain degree of relief, however, in knowing that these ships are made in China.

The first destroyer just hit the white caps.

You don't want to compete. It's too painful.
"We can't break our addiction because we're weak. We can't make ships, or cars, or AI chips, or IPhones, or rare earth metals, or anything we actually need to survive as a sovereign nation. We're dependent. The rest of the world will be good to us and keep giving us trinkets as we sink back on the couch, turn on the tv and fade into nothing. I promise".
You're a quitter and a future victim of natural selection. I hope people like don't destroy the entire country as you wallow in your self pity. The younger generations will have buck up, take charge and run you over.

I would rather us scrap the Jones Act entirely than overcorrect our inter-port shipping policies to the extent necessary to force American shipyards to build the boats necessary to make up that gap.

The quality of Chinese made ships has been improving. All the technology they’ve stolen from US and European companies is starting to bear fruit.

The jones act is the only thing keeping what little ship building industry we have alive. You would have foreign flagged and crewed vessels pushing barges up the Mississippi in no time. We can’t compete price wise on large container ships and tankers we would no doubt build a fantastic product but our lead time and price would be ridiculous compared to what they can do in Asia. Jones act keeps the small shipyards active building for the oil and gas along with brown water.

But we named our ships after LGBTQ heroes, so that equals it out.

These other countries are heavily subsidizing their ship building industries

They also have dirt cheap expendable labor and don’t have to deal with osha, epa, deq etc

For any EU country to build ships it would have to be heavily subsidized given their labor costs and environmental regs
