The Trump administration really need to go after this issue of politics in religious organizations.

In addition to this guy saying Trump needs to shut up he also said Trump lies every day, spoke about the reflecting pool and the conflict in Iran.

Enough is enough and I would be saying the same about any religious organization under any president.

They should have to track their charitable giving and deduct it like any business. They shouldn't get de facto tax exemption.

Another example of a rule made by democrats that they ignore while enforcing it on the right.

i 100% agree, just not for the reasons you want them suspended. but they need to go.

It would be the most efficient means of determining whether a Church was in it for salvation or politics.

Just do away with the Johnson Amendment* and allow churches to preach what they want. Right now, the only voice box to Americans is the MSM (Lying Media).

* even though the Johnson Amendment really does not have any teeth.

This is the correct position.

501(c)3 is just another of LBJ's stoopid policies.

The power to tax is the power to destroy.

Churches are not businesses. Pastors and other paid staff already pay personal income taxes. Most small churches couldn’t afford to keep the lights on if they were not exempt from federal and state taxes. You could easily add a financial burden of 15% to 30% which most churches couldn’t absorb.

That doesn’t even touch on the intrusion of the state into the church.

On top of that you take away an incentive for people to give money to churches.

Yes, you can say that if you are a true believer and follow Christ's teachings that you will tithe whether you get to claim that on your taxes or not. However, sadly that's not the reality of the world.

Most noninflamitory thing you've ever said and I agree.

Many are.

Do you honestly believe that Joel Osteen and Joyce Meyer pay income tax that is commensurate with the lifestyles they live?

I'm using them at 2 blatant examples of abuse of the system, but there are many more.

This is true and I agree with your points.

Muh, make churches pay taxes is stupid.

Do businesses pay taxes on gross or net?

If a church spends all that it receives, exactly what is to be taxed for the get even with em?

Property tax? I guess that's a got eeem.

There should be zero tax exempt entities. We should all pay taxes.

That’s a big one. This alone could sink a lot of churches and have them to immediately close up and revert to house churches or other similar venues that are extremely difficult to manage or sustain growth.

Not sure it would make much difference. A Church could pretty easily come up with a zero P&L statement by paying debt, etc. Churches pay sales' tax so I would not call them completely "tax exempt".

As a non'-beliver I am, surprisingly, not fully on board with this. Churches do play a positive role in small rural communities. Now those big mega-church swindlers can frick themselves. 90 % of the soft.pink-handed, Israeli-owned American clergy are more useless than strip-mall divorce lawyers.

Maybe something along the lines of a homestead exemption? First $75k tax-free but tax the shite out of everything above that.

I doubt that, as a church is definitionally not a business. As soon as it begins operating for-profit, it stops being a church.

You are probably referring to the examples you provided. If so, even they are technically not businesses. Those are individuals who are wolves and are fleecing the sheep with false teaching, but their “ministries” are not for-profit businesses, even if they act like one in some respects.

I have no idea, but by our current laws and tax code, they are required to pay individual income taxes.

May I suggest watching this segment with John Olivier on his Last Week Tonight when he talked about Churches and their tax exempt status 10 years ago.

Interesting opinion. That’s gonna be a double edged sword, no?
