From 1950 in NY, murder 2.5xed to 1965 crime was rising drastically.
Those concerns were coming from urban citizens.
Looking at NY, murder 2.5xed, violent crime 4xed from 1965 to 1980 robbery 5xed with no real population change
And then robbery fell to 10% of what it was in 1980. Murder to 25%.
You heard so many liberals who have their own Robin Hood legends that you ignore that post 1960 the data shows a massive increase in crime of all types.
We have data, this wasn't a made up crisis. City people were getting murdered, robbed, and burglered.
Reagan saved a lot of lives.
The crack epidemic had a lot of causes, some of which are heavily rooted in welfare.
Look, you have your happy story and you only care about your side, but the world is far more complex then you pretend.
There were options, the progressive one was creating more problems, so the nation cracked down on crime. All the while Marxists in their ivory towers attacked the nation of behalf of a murderous communist backer, the Soviet Union.
But those fools wrote the books you read, leaving out details and facts that disagree with them.

Why are you so defensive? I only mentioned the race riots because they were the justification for militarization decades before 9/11.

They were living in the homes of families that included suicide bombers. On purpose.
They were playing chicken with Israeli tanks and bulldozers on purpose. They were running up and confronting Israeli soldiers at checkpoints where suicide attacks had occurred.

when you travel to a foreign country you should know that your rights and expectations of American LEO dont apply there
I have travelled all over the world and I know better than to protest the local government or antagonize the local LEO, the military or even citizens. If you do, then you take the risks and get what you get.

I'm not sure if it's your single narrative great men worldview.
Or it's how you refuse to process data and do your own primary research.
It's some combination, that refuses to give most humans their own agency.
Nothing happens in a vacuum.
The race riots had roots in the great migration, where the descendents of slaves moved north to work in industrial areas.
It created a vibrant culture that was often at odds with the existing people who built that city.
This was similar to the struggles of the Irish and Italians.
But due to a number of factors, including racial bias, the "white" groups including Hispanics were a step ahead of African Americans in the 1950s. (Though the city builders would not have referred to any of them as "white').
Then came drugs and welfare.
We sent our desegregated army to Vietnam, many soldiers came back with a habit for drugs.
Mexico really increased the amount of drugs produced in response.
So no, it wasn't just Johnson and Reagan acting in a bubble.
That's why I'm defensive, you have a reflex towards the world view you read in the small number of "studies" you read a book about.
It's like you don't care about solutions, only blame.
The same fundamental problems are incarcerating and killing people of all races.
Black Americans were just the last large group of urban poor, and got hit the hardest by the welfare drugs epidemic.
But yes, keep repeating the lie that it was two great men that randomly decided to militarize the police.
