With friends like these, who needs enemies? Since when did Hawley become Cornyn?

quote:

Missouri GOP Sen. Josh Hawley plans to introduce legislation Tuesday to raise the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour — a position that aligns one of the most conservative Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill with some of the most liberal members of Congress.

The legislation, called the "Higher Wages for American Workers Act," would raise the federal standard starting in 2026 and would also call for an increase in subsequent years to match inflation, CBS News has exclusively learned.

I don't have an ideological objection to a minimum wage. I don't see a practical reason for this effort, though. And I think trying to set a meaningful minimum wage in a country as large as ours with 350m+ people is also pretty stupid.

Does his bill address a minimum increase for those who were already making $15/hr? Of course it doesn't, and that's why a minimum wage does not work.

This is not the worst idea in the world, with minimal impact. There are very, very few jobs paying less than that now, and this is a popular idea.

Of course not, the person above the "bottom tier" who was making $15 before would require a raise, and the person above them would require a raise, and so on. So the $15 to operate the fry machine would comparatively provide zero additional purchasing power. This idea is fricking stupid.

If we get the slave labor that dems love so much out of our country, wages will find a new higher level naturally without being mandated by the government.

So for those making $10-15/hr now, how much will they make after? For those making $15-20 now, how will their wages be adjusted after?

Continue down the line

$20-25
25-30
30-35
35-40

Now, tell me how bad you are going to frick up inflation in this country by doing so.

It is a terrible idea.

Silly reasoning. According to the BLS, 30.2M jobs paid less than $15/hr in 2022, which was 20% of total national employment.

Don't know how accurate they are, but Oxfam America estimated 2024 that 22M made less than $15/hr, or 23% of the workforce.

So, your initial statement is very wrong. Secondly, States are already able to set their own minimum wage. a $15 minimum wage won't be anything for NY or CA since they arelready have a state minimum wage that is that. Rural Mississippi or something, it would absolutely decimate.

No job in America pays this low. The market rate for even the lowest paid jobs in America are now above 7.25.

Also, most states have minimum wages above the federal so it’s moot point

This. there should always be separation between "skilled" and "unskilled" labor. Min wage should be an entry level pay scale. once the bottom scale is raised, then the upper scale should also be raised, and everyone in between should theoretically scale accordingly.

However, there is a threshold on when the bottom scale is too high to support labor and is replaced by other means (automation/more tasks per person, ect.) Having a higher unemployment pay can actually hurt those trying to gain entry into the work force and get the experience needed to move to higher pay scales above Min wage.

Don’t have the energy anymore to explain why this is bad on so many different levels. All I’ll say is politicians need to remember that we aren’t one America in terms of these proposals
. We are United States and different

really? It makes everything more expensive (especially fast food); incentivizes places to replace workers with computer kiosks and kills entry level workers and teens looking for entry level type jobs

It’s one of the main reasons that so many restaurants in CA are failing…
