I’m a strong supporter of marriage, so forgive the analogy. Why buy the milk when the cow provides it for free? Puerto Rico gets all the free stuff without the taxes presently.

A state can be split if the state agrees to it.

Here's a decent read on the subject, as well as puerto rico.

1- Their citizens approved it in a referendum. The time to make that argument to their citizens has passed [for now].

2- That's an excellent talking point for the dems. "Right now PR is getting more from the US taxpayer than they are putting in, this is a fiscal decision that all fiscal conservatives should agree with"

It's going to happen.

Interesting...its been put forth at least two other times and the choices were: 1) become a state, 2): become an independent country, or 3): keep the status quo and they have always chosen 3. I wonder if they know they are going to have to give up their generous benefits and start paying federal tax?

Does that mean it's over forever for Republicans? For the next 200 years it's all democrats all the time? No internal combustion engine? A complete electric economy?

It better be done in 2 years before the Senate and HOR flips.

No. Even the dems don't want to make PR eligible for full state benefits.

They'll try DC first, knowing it will fail, and then move on to something else.

Median income in Puerto Rico is <$20k. The vast majority of them won’t be paying income taxes. The vast majority of them will qualify for welfare and food stamps. They’ll be getting LOTS MORE free stuff. We are already $27 trillion in debt. This might be what we finally need to push us over that Cloward-Piven cliff.

You think the dems give one single iota of a speck of shite about fiscal realities of anything? It's about power.

If they know it would fail, why would they pursue it?

Puerto Ricans only claim to be Americans when it suits them. Hell, they even have their own Olympic team. Give them independence, not statehood. Let them sink or swim on their own.

Cuts both ways. According to a number of yuckle fricks on this board they aren't American regardless of whether they are pro-American or not.

As to the OP, I don't see any real movement on the issue in the near term.

As to the leadership of the island, they will need to embrace the austerity that will be needed to pull out of the deep financial hole they find themselves in.

Yea, with like 20% turnout and the anti-statehood party boycotting the vote.

PR doesn’t want to be a state.

Texas is allowed to divide itself into 5 different states if it wants. It was one of the agreements in the resolution between the Republic of Texas and the United States when Texas became a State in 1845.

Only if Congress allows that agreement to control. The agreement could be very easily replaced unilaterally by Congress .

No piece of paper/agreement signed with the US government 150 years ago means anything at all.
