Those are opposing forces. As such, they cannot co-exist.

We are living in the Tytler quote (a democracy can exist only until the citizenry realizes it can vote itself largess from the public coffers - paraphrased).

No one who wants to be (re)elected to office is going to push for enough austerity to matter. Not only would they likely face losing, getting such a measure pushed through would cause at least a recession due to the economy being so addicted on LARGE deficit spending each year just to get us ~2% GDP growth.

Even something which should be common-sense like just locking spending at $X for Y years in order for inflation to work in our favor long enough to balance the budget (or, heaven forbid, begin to make a surplus with which to start paying down some of the debt), would be met with intense but quiet resistance by those running for office who know that the easiest way to gain votes is to promise for government to spend more on things they care about than the opponent.

This is where you are going to lose a lot of ideas. The fact that the current administration is finding some actual flat out fraud, and yet they still have congress pushing back on reducing spending tells me that Congress has no desire to get the budget on track and reduce debt.

IMO, the first step, and should not be controversial, is to address the fraud, waste and abuse. In this same bucket, non-citizens should not be receiving governmental benefits just for existing within our borders.

Next step will be to aggressively address foreign spending. We send out way too much money without any controls or oversight on how that money is spent. As a US citizens, if you own a company that receives federal funding (even if indirectly) over a certain threshold, you must have all of your receipts in order to show what money you received from all sources, and how you spent those federal funds. If you cannot do this, your federal funding is cutoff and you are investigated. Foreign entities should be subjected to the same standards, if not more stingent.

More able bodies working, fewer freebies, economic growth and make congress do their job and pass a real budget that actually leaves a bit for emergencies. Also, inflation will likely need to be a bit above 2%

Cut entitlement programs, but any politician who runs on that, won't get elected. So besides bring back manufacturing, keep tariffs going, and take over the hemisphere, not sure what else can do?
