''...were steady on their meds."
And this is the problem. The greatest majority of them refuse to maintain their meds on an outpatient basis. When we did away with institutional care, because it was not pretty, these people were left to their own devices. Most are fine when medicated, but the minute they get to feeling better they stop the medication because they do not like the side effects or feel it is not necessary.

Reopening the nationwide system of sheltered treatment and housing would be great, but it won’t happen.
To provide this necessary service taxes would have to be raised bigly. Trump’s wealthy donors won’t allow it.

Not necessarily... DOGE, Tariffs, removing illegal aliens, limiting welfare in all forms to those in need, etc... we might find some money to move around.

THIS is the biggest problem we have -
We need to have the equivalent of the FDR work projects back in the '30s - if you cannot find a job you go to work doing good work for the benefit of the people - either that or go to mental institution.
The majority of our crime/homeless problem is that we are breeding them on purpose - they are a "useful idiot" population that can be manipulated for political power where their concentration provides the margin of victory in elections.
They provide an essential source for democrat ballot harvesting. Democrats would have no chance of 'winning' elections without this numerical advantage

We just need to house feed and Medicate them into complacency. The problem is we'll try to "treat" them and it will become a bottomless money pit

Cue the libtards screaming that mental institutions are inhumane and people should be treated, not imprisoned....

It is much needed and there is no doubt about it. This should have happened long ago.

Pandora’s box. I wouldn’t trust the deep state with this kind of power. Any opposing leaders would be there drugged up and locked away.

He definitely should. It is a major issue especially if you have ever worked in the medical field in a hospital setting. It is an absolute disaster and woefully inadequate.

Long term supportive housing still exists on a very limited and fractured level. There’s a guy I know who has a few felony convictions stemming from a psychotic break he had. He’s since been diagnosed with schizophrenia (with accompanying auditory hallucinations). Somehow, he was able to qualify for long term supportive housing and found a placement. He’s so stable now. He went from never showering, taking his meds intermittently and smoking cigarettes he found on the sidewalk to holding down a job and being a productive member of society.
And that "very limited and fractured level" is the problem.
The field has become far more refined since the asylum days. While that's not a guarantee it would work better (having a dual focus of helping those who can re-integrate into society do so while also acting as a holding facility for those whose problems are so severe that they cannot), it's likely to be a better option.
For people like the guy in your example, it would be a safety net he (and others like him) could rely on in case they stumbled.

Considering what happened in Middletown, CT such facilities s/never be shut down. In 1989 a young girl was stabbed repeatedly to death in front of her mother on a busy city sidewalk. The man was a patient at a nearby facility supposedly out on a day pass. The director denies that such a pass was authorized for this patient.

That's most definitely what's up.
