President Donald Trump has indicated he would consider reopening mental institutions for individuals with severe psychiatric conditions, all part of his broader approach to combating crime.

In an hour interview published Monday by the Daily Caller, White House reporter Reagan Reese interviewed the president in the Oval Office.

During a discussion about Trump's efforts to fix crime nationwide, Reese raised the idea of the federal government reviving asylums for those with serious mental illness.

'Would you be open to the government reopening insane asylums for people with serious mental illness?' Reese asked.

'Yeah. I would,' Trump replied.

Trump went on to say that the government used to have mental institutions, adding that states like California and New York used them, and released everyone into the public because they couldn't afford to keep them in the facilities any longer.

While they weren't always run well, I think they were better for society overall than what we have now.

This is the way... not just to get them off the street for our own convenience, but also that they may receive steady treatment and live the best life they can.

Good luck, I guess. They all closed after people began suing the government for providing substandard service… so every government agency decided to stop offering any services at all.

Agreed. I have worked in that field for many years. We have so many people who could live a decent life if they just had shelter, food and were steady on their meds.

If Trump gets what he wants in prescription meds Medicare and Medicaid will have some extra money. I’m sure plenty homeless folk, who are probably sorting through some mental health issues, qualify for those programs. There’s an opportunity there.

Having said that, the government can’t run shite, nut house included. See willowbrook.

Ship all democrats into northern Minnesota. Reclaiming the eastern coast and western coast would solve all issues.

They need to be reopened, but it will cost a boatload of money. I also imagine there is a pretty healthy lobby for the private institutions that will pitch a fit despite having completely failed their mission.

This, though, is bullshite and is an example of Donald just not being able to help himself. EVERY politician of every stripe and color, on every team, in every state has had a hand in gutting our public mental healthcare in this country over the past 50+ years.

Yeah... can't argue with that.

The government still offers substandard mental healthcare. It just now falls on local law enforcement and county jails that are ill equipped and poorly funded to take on the burden. So, the people who need it get shuffled out the door to wait for months and months on a bed at a private facility.

Is like anything else - one gets what they pay for. My entire career was on the inpatient side - idd for ten years and 25 psych. We were well funded and provided a pretty reasonable product.

It was the Right's Advocates and Community based outpatient groups that crippled residential settings - along with Legislatures on the cheap.

We have criminalized mental health thanks to the efforts - misguided - of the unholy alliance noted above
