Add 3 first aid kits with tourniquets. A small one you can carry, a larger more complete for for your car, and a multi use one for your home. And know what it all does, how to use it, and when it goes bad.

What do you feel is too heavy, and what items do you consider to be excessive from others’ setups in your experience?

One of those situations where you may end up with the last laugh. All I've got as of now is a shotgun, a rifle and a four wheel drive. And some twine. I could make due with those for a little while.
You can do ANYTHING with baling wire and duct tape.

Not so much worried about all our shooting war as I am economic collapse and supply chain failure. Stores go empty and the shot hits the fan. We got a taste with COVID but it can get much much worse. Society is merely a week or two from collapse at any given moment once modern conveniences go dark.

Katrina. Or a handful of Antifa Snipers, setting up in diverse States, on Interstate lanes of supply...and shooting Walmart/Basic Goods trucks. And hitting Grid Transformer Stations.
Not to mention an increasingly rogue China.
Every responsible citizen who is able, should prepare. Kinda like wearing a mask if you have CV...cya for Family and respect your neighbors.

I for one, respect your post as I am sure most do....but if you haven't noticed....you get eaten alive no matter what. Sounds like your plan is reasonable. Be hopeful, America has survived much worse.

Assuming a 72-hour bug out situation, it isn't complicated, you need food, shelter, water, first aid and a way to make fire easily.
Problem is - when you go, you have to make an arbitrary decision - 72 hours, 1 week, 1 month? Most Americans simply aren't competent to live off the land, so that weight becomes more and more food and water. Sure, you eat your way to the bottom of the pack and the assumption is you won't be on the move the entire time - but what if you are?
Most folks' bug out bags are too broad and not specific to the bug out goals. A 72-hour "on foot" bug out bag is vastly different than a 1-month "vehicular" bug out "kit" (which will likely be multiple bags and boxes).

All unnecessary
Hopefully it is all unnecessary. But the Titanic didn't have enough lifeboats because they were unnecessary on an unsinkable ship.

Problem is - when you go
I've discussed "bug out" with a young and aware (adopted) 'Grandson'. With young children. He says that the accepted 'Survivalist' model is to be on the move. I disagreed...offering that the innate problem of such a strategy would be moving into unknown territory, in a time when people who own and know that territory are inclined to shoot first. From strategic positions.
If one wants to beat the rush out of an LSU Game...one must depart the Stands well BEFORE the masses do; while the Game still holds interest. Otherwise, it's better to hunker down, wait out the dog fight...and then slip out through what is left.
I told him that if he was really serious...his best shot would be to buy an old shrimp boat for cheap, rig it up for weathering the 'storm', and upon first indication of a real collapse...head out and anchor the thing in the middle of Lake Maurepas. Hopefully along with a circle of other trusted friends of the same mind. Defensible position. A month there and the masses would be cut to manageable numbers.
And I agree with those who suggest Jesus as THE strategy base. That is always an assumption from my POV.

"prepared" for events that will never happen.
This is incorrect. Yellowstone periodically erupts and it is just a matter of when. Large meteorites strike periodically and that also is simply a when and not an if. Monster solar flares happen periodically. Remember the telegrapgh wires getting fried? If that happened today we would be straight back to living lie we did 300 years ago.
I have learned a lot of crap that I soon forget. Like how to make pectin for making jelly, how to make a compass from scratch, or how to make leather or alcohol, various traps tc. etc.! Prepping will feed you for a a while but you will run out of food at some point. And that is where knowledge comes in.

Researching whole house generators. Natural gas, propane and diesel. Between frozen and canned veggies, I could probably go a couple of months but can't keep the frozen stuff frozen without electricity.
Our power grid is extremely vulnerable. If the power grid goes down, natural gas will only be available for a few days. Really don't want one of those huge propane tanks sitting in my yard. You can bury them, I guess. Not sure how I could store enough diesel to last more than a few days.

I'm not running away. To old to run. I will move my family (non-cambatants) out to a safer place near family in a smaller town. Then return to my home. I will stand my ground and protect my home as best I can. Then try to take out the first cockroach who comes through my door (and they will come eventually). It will not be a remembered fight.

The best damned read for all of you. I originally read it as it was posted week by week and could not wait for the next post. Written in 2012-2014 IT WILL MAKE YOU THINK!

Edit to add an excerpt:
"“What changed?” you may ask. Then again, if you’re reading this, you may know what changed. I’m sure you would agree that many things changed. Our current condition was not the result of a single event like the zombie apocalypses or nuclear attacks that you see in movies. The world was not subjected to mass terrorist attacks – at least not in the traditional sense. We did this to ourselves. In a matter of a few months, we managed to crush thousands of years of advances. We willingly did to ourselves what our enemies could not. We brought modern civilization to its knees. We brought law and order, commerce … normal, everyday life to a screeching halt."

I live in the country, have a garden, and plenty to eat in the freezer. Animals come through my yard daily that will become a meal if I run out.
If it ever comes to my neighborhood being overrun, I'm just going to stay and fight it out. No bug out bag for me. If things get that bad, we won't last long anyway.
I'll protect my shite as long as I can and go down a free man.

Well this is what I have done,
1 i have plenty of guns with plenty of ammo and still buying ammo.
2 i live on 8 acres with 4 german shepherds who are trained to attack by simply saying "Octone".
3 my wife, son and daughter n law, son n law and daughter live on this property and we all have conceal carries and practice shoot once a month.
4 I have a years worth of MRE's in a gun safe along with flack jackets.
5 night vision scope along with a thermal spotting lens.
I am a hunter and fisherman and also know how to trap. I have had all of the above for years before virus and the terrorists started acting up. I will continue to build on the above not in fear but in practicality. I suggest every person do some of the above in this changing world.

"Prepping" is most likely needed in future to defend resources in the suburbs and country from roving gangs of people from cities who have nothing - they will head to areas that have resources in order to try and take it. If civil unrest turns into damage to infrastructure (trucking/shipping interrupted, electrical grid interrupted, water/gas interrupted) it will stop delivery of the goods and services needed by densely populated areas for daily survival. Most food, water, and energy is delivered on a just-in-time basis, meaning there isn't any inventory at the source of consumption. If Any of these things is interrupted to, say, Houston or NOLA or even North BR, what are the people in these dense areas going to do? The criminal elements of these cities will not sit there and starve. They will head out into other neighborhoods or towns to try and take what they need. This is when prepping will be important. There will still be deliveries and availability of food around the country, but supply could be spotty. The people with resources and planning will be able to stockpile but it is common sense that the poorest and those most likely to commit criminal acts are the ones that will run out of food/water/energy first and try to take it from those that are slightly more prepared.
I dont think we should be mostly worried about all out war. We should be worried about simply protecting our families, our communities, and our neighbors from those that cannot take care of themselves and will want to steal from those with the means to be independent. Much like our tax code...

I'm not concerned about a war. With China acting out, I AM concerned about the possibility of an EMP. It would set us back into the Dark Ages in a second.

quote:Exactly. It can't happen here. History is wrong. You should totally not worry about something silly as violence in the street and mobs burning down businesses and neighborhoods. Can't happen here.
What are you scared of baw? Some soy boys and fat uglies with daddy issues?
Besides... the best time to prepare is after the violence starts, right? Just go down to your local Acadmey and grab whatever guns and ammo you might need. Plenty to go around. Cheap too.
