I watched a video on a potential civil war between Republicans and Democrats. I turned to my wife and said "the war would last 5 minutes. Cut the power to large cities and they'll surrender to get their wifi back"

You won’t survive a societal breakdown by yourself. Linked story is about surviving the Bosnian war. Insight to how to survive with a group.

Shelter- This is usually the heaviest piece of equipment in your pack. If you're going with a tent, the same rules for a pack apply here. You don't need that fancy light holder or gear loft. Skip the huge vestibule upgrade. I prefer to use a hammock and tarp as my shelter, but when I am in a tent, this is what I use:

That's the Zpacks Duplex. It's made of an extreme ultralight material called Cuben Fiber. A lot of people are calling it Dyneema now. I guess the Cuban's were offended. As far as a hammock goes, I use the Dutchware Half-Wit

If you're gping to use a hammock(highly recommend)you will need some type of protection from the elements. I like an ultralight tarp made from Dyneema like this one from Hammock Gear.

Water Filtration- Perhaps your most important piece of gear and should not be overlooked. Where people go too far, is in bringing multiple ways of filtration because they're afraid one may fail or not work. Simplify it and go with an easily cleanable and flushable filter that can be used on a lightweight, 2oz Smart Water bottle like this from Sawyer. Iodine tablets are another option, but I hate the taste and you can poison yourself if you don't treat the water correctly.

Communication- Who doesn't love radio? HAM and prepping are linked for obvious reasons. I won't get into the technical side of things, but the radio we use is the Yaesu FT-4XR

Obviously this is all very subjective and everyone's budget is different. I like being able to move quickly with my gear and to be able to break down camp very quickly. What I have shared should give some of you an idea of the absolute minimum you would need to survive in the event SHTF. If someone wants to start a prepping/survival thread, I'd be happy to go more in depth with the specifics of the gear I chose and why.

Yup!

We had evacuated to Baton Rouge ... and a few days after the storm, there were no eggs, milk or bread.

So if people think they can just move on and find stuff ... they have another thing coming.

I live in the burbs, too, but Atlanta sits between me and the hideout, aka the farm.

If things got ugly, we’d load up and take back roads instead of waiting it out. Too many damn people here.

Sharks got all our guns too, wtf?

Read one second after, great book. You have to make it a year, at that point, 90% of the population will be gone. There will be no meds, disease and infection will be rampant, wildlife decimated, old and very young dead, pretty much a horror show in the beginning as everyone competes for survival. Only the very skilled+prepared+healthy+lucky+supported will be left.

Its the next wave after that you will worry about. They will be armed, smarter, used to killing and know how to take others stuff, a modern hunter gatherer if you will. It will not be a pleasant life, I can assure you. If you make it, there wont be many if any of your loved ones left, and your hope for the future will be a meal and shelter.

Its one thing to be able to fend for yourself without the things we take for granted, but when everyone is trying to take it from you at the same time it becomes exponentially harder.

Sometimes I think the only way is a sailboat and get out and try to last thru the horror show but all of it sounds pretty shitty....just the lack of air condition would probably kill me haha, I'm not a young buck anymore.

I probably have more guns and ammo than most, a place to go, a way to get there and friends there too, defensible if supported with a flow well and food sources, but I think about my extended family and the friends I will lose, and I know that we should all do our best to make sure it never goes that far.

I think one aspect of prepping that’s often overlooked is your personal health. In order to move around fast in a SHTF scenario, you need to be physically fit. Lose some weight, start jogging, do push-ups, get any lingering injury looked at and fixed.

Most depressing Book I ever read, M. Decided then that life in such a scenario would be more of a curse than a blessing.

We've watched on the TV as Countries all over the World have imploded from Ideological/Religious-based strife, but this Nation has a particular dynamic (racial/cultural diversity) coupled with the advent of Social Media and the speed of transport, which is gas on a fire. Just like CV, our Nation will experience extraordinary and more intense scenarios, which will make 'survival' a cost/benefit issue. Especially in the 'spiritual' category. And for those who believe that 'Spirit' IS the basis of life...well...good luck. This old man will be moving to next life; unless the Good Lord keeps me here via extraordinary circumstance. "There will be those who will seek death, but shall not find it". Geez.

To help my immune system I've not had anything alcoholic to drink in over 6 months now. Keep hearing that alcoholism has gone up, but to be honest, I think after everyone got over the initial. ' Woo hoo!! Party at home for several weeks! ', the novelty has kinda wore off. Or maybe it hasn't, I can't say. I just have abstained entirely.

That and trying to stick to my work out routine, which, to be honest, has been a challenge.
