If I had to guess it's because of how interpolation works. And pay attention to the scale used too.
It's cartography and data visualization. No one wants to produce an ugly map.

It's amazing how people on here post crap without any regard to the legitimacy of the source material as long as it fits the narrative they want to push.
The linked article is by Tony Heller. Heller has degrees in Geology and Electrical Engineering. Until 2014 Heller wrote under the pseudonym Steven Goddard. Very impressive isn't it -- when a person who portrays himself to be a scientist writes under a pseudonym.
If you search for Tony Heller/Steven Goddard on Google Scholar you will find that he has NEVER published a peer-reviewed article.
A completely useless post.

If those Februarys are not in consecutive years, then no fricks should be given.

quote:I think the issue is that the color coding on the maps represent different measures of deviation from the mean. The first represents the numeric deviation without regards to the historical variance, whereas the second represents that deviation with 7 ordinal categories from “record coldest” to “record warmest,” and presumably accounts for the variance (e.g., standard deviations from mean).
no
And you can see the same pattern occurring with the change from most extreme warm deviations as the extreme cold deviations in the first map to the next.
For example, Alaska, Siberia, and Northern Europe are both dark red in the first map but are a lighter red in the second, just like the dark blue areas circled in the first map are a lighter blue in the second. Presumably these areas of extreme, both warm and cold, are also areas that have extreme variability so a +/- 5 or more degrees occurs more frequently and therefore, isn’t as likely to be a record cold or warm year.

Because he was mocking climate alarmists and it's was a way to get their attention with a last name like Goddard. It triggered an initial thought from the alarmists that he being associated with the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. It worked. It got their attention.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Yes, climate is changing. It always has, and always will. Having about 170 year sample out of four billion years of Earth history is not exactly an accurate measuring stick. Man has overestimated its contribution too, and ability to control, climate change.

Watts’s comment from article pointing out Goddard’s/Heller’s Errors
quote:
I took Goddard to task over this as well in a private email, saying he was very wrong and needed to do better. I also pointed out to him that his initial claim was wronger than wrong, as he was claiming that 40% of USCHN STATIONS were missing.
quote:
Predictably, he swept that under the rug, and then proceeded to tell me in email that I don’t know what I’m talking about. Fortunately I saved screen caps from his original post and the edit he made afterwards.
quote:
This, combined with his inability to openly admit to and correct mistakes, is why I booted him from WUWT some years ago, after he refused to admit that his claim about CO2 freezing on the surface of Antarctica couldn’t be possible due to partial pressure of CO2.

He’s hopelessly stubborn, worse than Mann at being able to admit mistakes IMHO.

I hope you didn't know about that bullshite before you published this crap and wasted everyone's time. How about it?

Well g@ddamn...
You could have fooled me when we had a full week with single digit lows here in Oklahoma... and the rest of the month was highs mostly in the 30s and 40s. One of the coldest Februaries I can recall here. It only just started getting nice here a week ago.
But we're conservatives in a flyover state, so our facts don't matter.

These conversations are always exhausting because it's all meaningless unless a viable solution is proposed to change the climate of the Earth within a useful time interval - which doesn't exist at the moment.
If a proposed plan doesn't include the expansion of nuclear power, that plan belongs in a garbage can.

Now the fact that he was kicked off as Stoddard, and it was in 2014, it becomes clear why he stopped posting as Stoddard in 2014 and started posting under his real name Heller.
