You must not live near Mexicans, they picnic on weekends and if you interact with them you're immediately invited for a plate

I mentioned to someone the other day that when I see Hispanic families on the weekend, I feel like I’m stepping back in time. They are always enjoying the local parks and having picnics. If I go by creeks and lakes where we use to swim and play when I was young, there is about a 90% chance I’ll see a couple of Hispanic families having a picnic and their kids playing in the water. It makes me realize what we have stopped doing as American families.

Everyone that would picnic lives in a nice house and so do all of their friends. Plus public areas have been destroyed by the undesirables.

City Park in New Orleans is always busy with activity. Most Saturday mornings, I take my kids there and get them beignets they eat at a picnic table by a small body of water. Not sure if that counts as a picnic. We are never the only family there doing this.

There’s always tons of people enjoying all parts of the park whenever I go, which is quite a bit because we live a few minutes away. Maybe you just don’t go to parks?

Our picnic is at night and is almost always called a campout. Over several days it is known as camping out. It is always on private land, however.

People are addicted to these devices. Scrolling. Online constantly. Going out in nature, hiking, canoeing, kayaking, sweating, burning calories or even a simple picnic is getting lost. Some still do, including myself. I’m a member of several hiking and trail running groups. But it’s a problem.

I agree with all the phone replies.
Parks are mostly covered with homeless and thugs now.
People don’t just sit and chill anymore.
When was the last time you sat on a porch like back in the day just looking around and being in the moment?
If your phone doesn’t go off for some reason you will check it anyway.

As wackatimesthree stated, it is the correct answer.

Extended TOD's question from picnic to camping, where it is still popular but only if you are pulling a rig with slide-outs, Starlink, HD TV's and fold down outdoor grills and awnings.

People want their conveniences, and I understand why. Even the homeless have publicly provided cell phones... unfortunately.

Middle class + people don’t really do things in public anymore, at least not like they used to

They do all sorts of things in public like dine out, attend sporting events, concerts.

I'm not sure why you think they don't go out in public

Can you surry, can you picnic, whoa?
Can you surry, can you picnic?

Come on, come on and surry down to a stoned soul picnic
Surry down to a stoned soul picnic (Can you surry, can you picnic?)
There'll be lots of time and wine
Red yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine
Red yellow honey, sassafras and moonshine
Stoned soul, stoned soul, whoa

Come on, come on and surry down to a stoned soul picnic
Surry down to a stoned soul picnic (Can you surry, can you picnic?)
Rain and sun come in again
And from the sky come the Lord and the lightning
And from the sky come the Lord and the lightning
Stoned soul, stoned soul
Surry on, soul

Funny enough I had some catfish ponds 3-4 years ago south of Moorhead, Ms that bordered the MDCC (community college) campus and I would see college students picnicking on the ponds all the time I guess cause I had nice Bermuda grass levees. I’ve also caught a couple fricking in the car or smoking a joint. They’d do it there since it wasn’t on campus and couldn’t get in trouble by campus pd. I didn’t care I let them be

I've never been on a family picnic but we had an annual BBQ under the city park's biggest shed for all oil field workers and family. About 200 people came at noon for a 4 p.m. serving of BBQ chicken and burgers. The pits were made of 2 of these:

Yea I don’t do the traditional family picnic in the park or whatever but we do go to big cookouts outdoors a couple times a year. Usually 4th of July and a dove hunt Labor Day weekend. And i host a big crawfish cooking every May for my wife’s bday

My daughter (no pics, she is 13) planned and set up a picnic for her little boyfriend at a local park for their 6 month "anniversary". I took them to a local park and walked around the lake with my wife. It was actually kinda nice and I told my wife that we should do one before the weather gets too cold.
