Only 23%.?
I’m disappointed.

Add in zero fans in the stand and that is a big hit.

So the virus that's making people stay home, and closer to their TVs, is to blame for your low ratings?

Only 23%? I was hoping for more to be honest but hope football has the same fate.
Football will probably be a lot worse.

looked it up myself:
From this past weekend:
PGA Championship was on Aug 9th weekend:
From Aug 2nd tourney:
From the weekend before, July 26th:
From this past weekend:
quote:
Buoyed by a strong finish spilling into the prime time window, the 2020 BMW championship was up 10% from 2019’s playing, drawing a 2.3 and 3.4 million average viewers on NBC. Jon Rahm defeated Dustin Johnson after both made unbelievable 18th green putts, one in regulation (Johnson) and the latter in the sudden death (Rahm).
The 2020 BMW was played a week later than last year and without NFL preseason competition.
The 2.23 final round rating almost won the sports weekend, falling just short of NASCAR’s Saturday race but easily outdrawing several NBA playoff games on cable.
PGA Championship was on Aug 9th weekend:
quote:
ESPN, which is taking its whack at the TV golf piñata with this week’s PGA Championship, reported that ratings from the first day of the tournament were the best in five years.
According to a release from the company, Thursday’s opening round averaged 1.246 million viewers, the best since 2015 and the second-best opening round in the last 10 years. Friday’s round did even better, jumping 43 percent higher to average 1.763 million.
A number of factors are contributing. With a prime-time slot on the East coast, the telecasts were destined to be successful, but the improvement in numbers — the broadcast peaked with 2.26 million viewers from 7-7:15 p.m. ET — is reason for TV execs and Tour officials to rejoice.
From Aug 2nd tourney:
quote:
The final round of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis saw an even bigger jump, with viewership up almost 40 percent from last year. The only Tour event with a bigger audience thus far was for the Jack Nicklaus-hosted Memorial.
From the weekend before, July 26th:
quote:
The numbers have been up across the board for CBS, including an 11 percent spike over last year’s rating at the 3M Open in Minneapolis, which didn’t boast a big-name field.

I was hoping for a bigger crash. 23% ain't enough.

Right, because people being forced to spend more time at home would cause them to watch less TV.

Wouldn't COVID only increase viewership? No in game fans (not a big number but still), no new TV programs due to COVID, no bars (so less likelihood of miscounting group watches), very little else to do.
I just don't even know how you would spin the COVID angle to say it would hurt viewers.

Bullridings, rodeos and fishing shows will be the sports of choice by the first of Nov.
Fine by me.

The sport that reminds people what sports are about and doesn't throw politics into the mix will own the sports market.
But, right now, people have become used to not caring about sports.

I love the NBA playoffs, and watch it religiously. Have been enjoying it (even though my Spurs missed the postseason for the first time in 22 years
)
That said, them trying to blame cratering ratings on COVID is absolute lunacy.

How? All things being equal, they should have expected a decent INCREASE in viewership due to all the folks at home, and all the sports that was cancelled, i.e. fans starving for sports on TV.
A 23% decrease is, in reality, a 40% decrease from what could have been, if this was in fact, about BASKETBALL!!
Well, you could make the case that the games just aren't as exciting or meaningful given the environment.
I don't think that's the issue, but those looking for reasons will point to the bubble and its effect.

NBA Playoff Ratings Crash by 23%
Think about how big of an opportunity they squandered here. Ratings drops vs last year are one thing, but no real sports have been on TV for 6 months.
This should have been (pun) a layup for the NBA to rake in tons of extra ad revenue.
These losses are actually an order of magnitude or two bigger than 23% in real world impact.
Sort of like throwing a 103 yard pick 6

I truthfully do not know one person that watches the NBA. My son was a huge Lebron fan. Lord not anymore.

I was a huge NBA fan, always looking forward to the playoffs. I knew the players had different views than me, but they weren’t being thrown in my face. I still watched with all the divisive messages after the return because I wanted to see the Pels. The walkout last week was the final straw. These millionaires refusing to work because they live in this oppressive nation is laughable. I’m out.

That and they play at like 3 pm..,
I wouldn’t watch it anyway but some people are actually working
