Navy Sailor Who Jumped Off USS Abraham Lincoln Faces Disciplinary Charges, Could Lose Pay

A Navy sailor who jumped from the USS Abraham Lincoln this month is facing disciplinary action and could lose half his pay, according to charging documents and testimony from his wife.
The latest news follows a series of reports in mid-August claiming that sailors aboard the 5,000-man USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been in combat with Iran for more than five months and has spent more than 250 days in a row without making land, have made multiple attempts to jump overboard and are experiencing other issues with their mental health.
Naval families have also said there are safety concerns, food shortages, water contamination, and disruption in the mail system on the ship.
The unnamed sailor's wife reportedly told MS Now that her husband jumped from the ship in a suicide attempt on Aug. 3, and is now accused of violating the articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ). Military.com contacted the Navy for comment.
MS Now reportedly received charging documents that purportedly show the Navy has accused the sailor in question of violating Article 83 for "malingering"—a term related to instances when a sailor fakes illness to avoid work. The documents also said he had violated Article 86 for "absence without leave."

If this subject is searched in X, it is full of pearl clutchers blaming Trump and Hegseth for not giving him the mental help he needs.
RT and others are posting it as a embarrassment on the USN and USA. Most news publications such as the Military Times in the OP...Add in so coyly, the rhetoric of what is normal ship conditions at the end of an extension in conflict.
This kid could have joined just to off himself. They have jumpers on civilian and military cruises. The Navy takes mental health seriously... it appears his wife went on MSNow to complain and tie it to ships conditions, crappy food.

Tired of hearing about mental health. Even blue states preach it, but never put it into practice despite what they claim.

On a carrier stopping flight deck operations in conflict to go rescue a jumper is in the UCMJ somewhere.
When your wife goes on MSnow ahead or after a captains mast, She should be grateful it didn't go to a court martial. Losing pay and rank at captains mast happens for far less acts.

Way too many people who aren’t really fit for military service join the military. They go into it with blinders on.

That is pretty standard Navy procedure for that type of action. Jumpers on carriers is not unheard of though. It's rare but it does happen.

No. He is looking at forfeiture of half his pay for a couple months, he could lose some rank (one pay grade), restriction for up to 60 days, extra duty for 45 days, and correctional custody.
He is not facing a court martial.

My baby girl got her honorable discharge in May of 2025. She deployed on both the Truman and the Roosevelt. On her 2nd deployment (Roosevelt), they were off the coast of Yeman protecting the Bab-el-Mandeb strait and the Gulf of Hormuz. Yes, her deployment there was extended, too. She told us that a female sailor jumped off the stern of the Roosevelt to commit suicide, but was rescued. She never did find out the disciplinary results, but the sailor was removed from the ship. Yes, the conditions there were tough and hot. She worked on the flight deck, was a plane captain, and an aviation machinist mate. She passed out three times from the heat during that deployment and she was not the only flight deck crewman to do so. She didn't complain. She did her duty and I will always be proud of her for her service and sacrifice. FWIW, she will be 24 this Sunday.

I remember seeing a piece on all of these young people joining the military for the benefits a couple of years ago, and thinking they would never be called into action.
I am betting it was normal conditions on the ship, but 250 days under normal conditions is not enough for some of the soft military we may have. They can't get their chik-fil-a delivered to the base gate.

Not really. He won't go back to whatever unit he belongs to and probably will be separated soon after the UCMJ proceedings. Bust you down in rank, take your pay, kick you out on a bad conduct discharge.
ETA: Admin separation, not BCD.
