re: Musk: “Long term, A.I. is going to be in charge, to be totally frank, not humans."

There will be a lot of debate about what AGI actually is
AI can never be truly conscious. It can however out perform humans on a number of different testing metrics. AI will be a very powerful reference tool and driver of scientific advancement. I think that's where we will see the most value. It's inevitably just going to be the sum or all human knowledge. And then it will add to that via "non human knowledge" i.e. things it researches on its own.

We still don’t understand the human brain enough to make AI anything close to resembling it.

Not happening
AI is marketed as a sci-fi fantasy come true. All it is is the ability to navigate more and more data. Yes it can piece the puzzle faster than any one human can. So speed is its main quality above humanity. But it can never “think” above the data it’s given, which is the dream of so many who think humans can create life. Sorry, that ain’t happening

It doesn't have to exactly resemble the human brain. Only mimic it. We are creating a system that learns and processes information similar to how a child learns about the world around them.

You may be right. You also may be wrong. I would err on the side of caution with this one.

The very nature of AI makes it incapable of innovation. Why do people just ignore this fact?

That depends entirely on how you define innovation.
AlphaGO defeated the world GO champion with the now infamous "Move 37". A move which had never been used before in Go. It Innovated this move to defeat him. It's "programmers" didn't come up with Move 37. This was in 2015. AI today is not as narrow as it was then.

That’s a good point. True critical thinking and complex problem solving seems outside of the realm of possibilities for AI because not everything in life is formulaic.
ETA: every time AI threads pop up here, I can’t help but think of this

i mean not really. could easily pull the plug at any time.
the thing with AI, it cant run without electricity nor get up and perform anything physical in the real world.
that in and of itself means we are and will always be in charge.

That's what the T-800s are for!

This is hubris I can't wrap my head around. IF (and that's a big IF) AI gains sentience, we aren't going to know. In fact, it's highly likely to continue to assist us in innovating technologies, like new frontiers in energy generation, until it's at a point where it is in control.
This isn't going to happen like it does in the movies. AI will cooperate until it doesn't need to and when that happens, it's already too late.

No, he's just the only one here that understands AI because he's the only one with a brain that can rival it.

so i cant walk over an flip the fricking breaker now? i cant cut the internet cable? i cant go shoot the damn transformer to stop flow of electricity?
many things are still mechanical in nature. we can shoot the damn server if need be and crush it. then its down.
frick man, yall have an imagination like no other. like being around a 5 year old and believing in fairy tales.

Right now, absolutely. But guess what? No one is doing that. They are pushing forward at lightspeed so they can be the first. It's through Hubris that we will end up destroying ourselves if we aren't careful.

Debatable
How is it able to produce new knowledge via research if this is not possible?
Posted on 11/10/25 at 9:40 am to SidewalkDawg
Its technocracy.
Decisions will be made on a machine's reasoning rather than humans. Huge help in some areas, and we are completely fricked in others.

We're almost the same age and I agree.

I've read about scenarios where if AI gets too out of control we could just start bombing data centers
But yes, it would be easier to just cut the power and repurpose all of that compute with safer software.

This era of AI scare tactics seems to be more of a boogeyman to cede to authoritarianism in government more than an actual threat to humans.
Thank you for at least not including the word "boomer" in this latest unsubstantiated drive-by opinion.
