That was the part of Florida where the polls were still open (Central time zone) when the networks called the 2000 election for Gore after the Eastern time zone part closed. It is solid GOP due in large part to the military bases (NAS Pensacola, Eglin and Tyndall AFB's).

Well, most people expect Republicans to win back the seat in 2020 of course, however with the Senate being 52/48 and it being proving very difficult to find 50 votes, losing a vote even temporarily for 2 years is not good.
That's what the moderate Republicans in Alabama couldn't grasp.
