Vacationing with family. They separated and they lost all contact. He was an avid outdoorsman and able to live for days in the wilderness, according to the family.

Edit I guess since the article doesn't say anything about foul play and completely leaves out any cause of death we are to assume suicide? I think if it's a big enough story to broadcast than they should at least say cause of death.

I agree.

And yes, I think it's safe to say suicide until they tell us otherwise.

Glad the parents can start to find closure.

I hate to say it but I suspected suicide when I saw the kid had both his ears pierced.

Well, he was a sensitive fellow... bio-engineering major (Have a young friend who just graduated from AU with this major)... He was upset is mom was using Chat-GPT for everything... thinking it was 'not sustainable' for the environment... that they ended up having an argument. The family went to visit a temple, leaving him at the hotel. They realized he (through a tracking app) had left to go on a wilderness hike. Where they found the body.

Got in over his head probably.... Chat-GPT should be sued for another death --- SFP probably.

Typhoon hampered the search efforts

He had been arguing with his mother, Nancy, who told CNN that he was irritated by her use of ChatGPT to plan their trip to Japan, citing his concerns about the environmental impact of artificial intelligence.

This is from his childhood that moved back Japan

“I saw him as a best friend, a brother,” Shikari said.

“He was such a nice friend and when I first met him, I felt like nothing has changed. “We talked about politics, we talked about AI, we talked about a lot of things that’s going on in the world.”

Maybe he went to the Death Forest. It's a place that really exists. It has a reputation of a place that has an overwhelmingly inordinate amount of suicides.

I think that’s because it’s a place where people go to commit suicide. I saw a show on it a decade ago and I think there were still dead bodies near trees when they were filming. Suicide is not as taboo in Japan is my understanding.

Nothing I have seen indicates suicide.

The kid got upset because he was woke as hell and was offended that his mom was using Chat GPT, which he felt was a sin against the environment.

He left his family triggered over that, but there's no indication that he was suicidal at all.

Chances are much greater that he either ran into the wrong people or just encountered something out in the woods that killed him IMO.

I’m pretty sure that forest is hours away from Kyoto.

Young people are overly prone to thinking they have the world figured out. If they just hang around for a while, they'll discover they were wrong about nearly everything. Then hang around for a while longer and they'll discover they were still wrong about nearly everything. By the time they're old enough to conclusively figure everything out, they're senile and it's too late to commit suicide anyway.
