Medicare is the “Oxygen” that Keeps Rural Hospitals In Operation

I am always surprised when so many in Louisiana are against Medicare/medicaid (according to polls). They are a rural state with an aging poor population.
Rural hospitals derive between 1/3 and 2/3 of their revenue from Medicare. Reducing Medicare will gut these hospitals which means elderly and infirm will have to drive father, endure longer wait times, and overall see reduced care.
This also happens at a time when there is an increase in cancers in states with petrochemical economies.
While I don’t think doctors need to be paid more, the physician fee schedule is about to automatically reduce, which will have a domino effect on the overall quality of care.
Those with elderly loved ones (or those who will be elderly themselves within 20 years) should caution not to vote away their rights.

They are unconstitutional.
Period.

Would you go for making sure Medicare is only available for citizens and scrubbing out all fraud and waste out of it?

Louisiana once had a charity hospital system that was sort of actually a model of rather efficient progressive government services.

That's why we had a Charity Hospital system. I'm sure Blanco and Nagin pocked the rebuild money after Katrina.
Looks like the system other than the big hospital in NO is still around. Poor people already get free health care.

Rural America would die overnight without federal programs

You answered your own question. They’re overly subsidized. Nobody using those rural hospitals will pay paying for the services they use.

Medicare and the AMA's dickery with medical school enrollment to limit seats (in order to make sure there's not a glut of doctors) in the 80s and into the mid-2000s have combined to skew medical costs. Medicare and Medicaid fund demand of medical services while the AMA fricked over supply of medical professionals.
Just like with mortgage rates, the debt and deficits, there is no "easy" and "quick" answer and any worthwhile answer is going to come with a lot of pain before there is relief.

Healthcare is not a right. Living in the remotes is not a right.
Rural health care especially the CAH system needs a complete overhaul. Instead of 40-50 bed hospitals with a daily census below 5 they should become “stabilize and ship” ERs.

Yea, if we stopped funding these impoverished areas, the people would move away and disperse across the country. Instead, they group together in the rural south and make the area undesirable to anyone else.

Hospitals are not much different than say student loans or government backed loans. They all get money to easily thus driving up future costs. There is very little reason to be competitive when easy money comes along

our fees have been coming down for years. Doctor's fees are not what has driven healthcare costs constantly higher.

We still have a charity system. It’s just run by public/private entities.

Big difference between Medicare and Medicaid. Medicaid is eaten up with fraud and has been a disaster for most of the states that expanded it.

50 years ago Medicaid accounted for 10% of total U.S. healthcare costs. Today it accounts for over 18%.
50 years ago Medicare accounted for 10% of total U.S. healthcare costs. Today it accounts for 22%.
How can you say people are against it? People have voted for doubling both.

Poor elderly people with no resources would move from the cheapest place in the country, the rural South, to somewhere that is more expensive?
Is that really what you think will happen?

The elderly would likely stay, but the young would be forced to leave.
