FAA, NTSB investigating possible violation of safety protocol involving Trump, Marine One

quote:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said it is reviewing a potential violation of a new safety protocol and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is also investigating, after an incident Tuesday involving a commercial plane and the Marine One helicopter with President Donald Trump on board, Fox News Digital confirmed.

The incident occurred when a commercial plane took off from Reagan International Airport at the same time that Trump was departing the White House on Marine One, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The White House said Trump was never in any danger.

"Marine One flights are piloted by some of the best aviators in the world, and at no point was the president in harm’s way," White House spokesman Kush Desai told Fox News in a statement.

The NTSB on Wednesday afternoon posted on X that it is "investigating a reported loss of separation event between Marine One and a commercial aircraft departing DCA that occurred on Aug. 4."

The FAA, in a statement to Fox News Digital, reiterated the White House's point about the president's safety.

"Based on our preliminary safety review, there was momentary loss of separation, after which the aircraft continued to move away from one another. The air traffic controller was in contact with both the commercial pilot and Marine One pilot during the loss of separation. As the White House has said, the president was never in danger. We are continuing to review the incident and will implement any appropriate corrective actions based on our findings," the statement said.

A loss of separation is a breach of FAA rules that stipulate that aircraft at the same height must be at least three miles apart if they are within 40 miles of an Airport Surveillance Radar (ASR) antenna.

Isn't this the person responsible for keeping the proper separation between aircraft?
Maybe a pilot error?

Glad this is getting covered but I’m not aeronautical savvy enough to really see the hype, other than that area is super congested, recently had a deadly midair collision, some near hits, and now this.

Aircraft can fly pretty fast. That's not anything to shake your head at.

I get it, but is this more media hype or legitimate story?

Not a radical question to ask.

I've been on several flights where we've come within 0.8 miles of another passenger jet. A couple closer than that. If this is a big deal, it happens way more often than the FAA wants to let on.

Hypothetical question... if an air traffic controller thought he could 'literally kill modern-day Hitler', how many innocent lives would it be worth?... and how lucrative would a book-movie deal and getting MS-Now hosting gig be worth if he can get a hearing in front of Boasberg?

The solution is simple. Flights at Regan International need to be moderately reduced and a wider separation implemented. It is ashamed that last year's crash with the Army helicopters and the commuter plane didn't result in effective policy changes. Given the dynamics of the congestion over D.C. with government flights, etc., most commercial flights into and out of Regan International need to switch to Dulles or Baltimore.

This is a case of ATC failing to allow the required FAA separation. He allowed Marine 1 to depart the White House before the adequate separation was achieved. Both aircraft were flying in opposite directions thereby increasing separation more quickly. If it wasn't Marine 1, I doubt we would have heard about it.

No. Both pilots were doing what ATC had instructed them to do.

I thought "this person" was to hold all flights from Reagan while Marine One was entering or leaving the air space anywhere near the airport. Duecy just said that the White House is only 3.5 miles from Reagan.
Can't wait to hear the TDSers lament a "too bad" irrespective of the fact a collision would have gotten Trump but whoever and how many were on the commercial flight.

Foo, you dumb frick. Using the word “fast” as an adverb is meaningless coming from you. It’s arbitrary and irrational, since you don’t have an objective standard by which to demonstrate something as fast or not. So quit being an illogical irrational piece of shite using meaningless words for no reason.
