Considering the opportunity he had to be like Pelosi, Schumer, McTurtle, MTG and the rest of the rot, I'd say it's actually pretty awesome.
People aren't supposed to go into a $200K/year job and amass tens of millions of dollars in wealth. It's actually a testament to the fact that Graham was less corrupt than almost all of them, which is quite the compliment as opposed to sad...
He was a single guy with no kids who literally lived for the job he did. That much has become apparent.

He had virtually everything paid for as a congressman. Everything was free and some of the best healthcare in the country. He just didn’t care to exercise or take care of himself obviously. 1.4 million in South Carolina is a lot of money when you don’t need any money.

But I was addressing the other poster's example of Joe the Plumber.
If Joe only has a net worth of $1 million with at least 1/3 of his worth tied up in his non-liquid & non-income producing residence, he'd better not live more than 10-12 years after retirement.
If he does he might become one of those Walmart greeters we all feel sorry for working to make ends meet in his retirement.

He could have made a lot more money in the private sector. Politics aside I always appreciated Grahams calmness and sense of humor. Seemed like a guy you could sit down and have a beer with.
