Well, he’s 48

I would think his fan base is mostly 25-40 or so, so not exactly young or old

Impressive light show, but that performance was objectively horrid.

I don't think I could name a single song from Vultures 1 or 2 or Donda 2.

Is Kanye cool? Is he old people cool or the other kind of cool? I think I only care about old people cool things now but I’m not a Kanye fan. Sorry to disappoint.

I thought this was a more mature board full of experienced, thoughtful people.

Apparently not if woo or chi or wee or whatever the idjot's name is in a thing.

Hold My Liquor. Entire Graduation album.

Through the Wire is incredible, though. His first 3 albums are just untouchable.

Yeah, I don't know how anyone goes to a show for 2 1/2 hours of something like that.

I don't know what ever gave you that impression.

And that's coming from a guy who agrees on the subject matter.

If All of the Lights doesn't get you hyped up and ready to jump up and run through a wall, you're a damn robot. There were several incredible songs on those first few albums even for the non-rap fan like me.

My guilty pleasure out of all of his songs is Carnival though. I hate that I like it

But Flashing Lights, Power, Stronger, Mercy, Runaway, so many great songs that broke the genre. He really is an elite talent, it's too bad his personal struggles have tainted it

I was never much of a romantic
I never could take the intimacy
And I know it did damage
Cause the look in your eyes is killing me
I guess you knew of an advantage
Cause you can blame me for everything
I don't know how I'll manage
If one day you just up and leave

And I'll always find yeah, always find something wrong
You've been putting up with my shite just way too long
I'm so gifted at finding what I don't like the most
So I think it's time for us to have a toast

The best era of Kanye by far

I heard my 9-year-old singing “I Want It That Way” by the Backstreet Boys last week so I suppose anything is possible.

No, he's right.

We're talking about a grown man with a made-up ghetto name who has shortened it to be pretty much a grunt sound.

It's interesting to me that as much as this board hates black culture when it's in the news, so many embrace it when it's part of an entertainment act that is basically a Dr. Seuss book with a beat.

There are hall monitors that RA because non-political threads are posted here.

I dont care this was posted here. But I wont shy from saying....

I dont think Ye is talented in any way but branding tennis shoes/clothes for way too much money then they are worth.

Timeless classic music is from the 1950s 1960s 1970s

Will Ye's music be called all time classic. Doubtful...

Just curious, what is it you think is so profound or skillful about those particular lyrics?

I would say that Kanye himself has done much better than that. Those are pretty vanilla. No slant rhymes, no imagery at all, an easy rhyme necessitating a complete throwaway line at the end (actually, nothing but easy, obvious rhymes throughout), there's one relatively weak example of using a common phrase in a new context, and that's about all that's interesting about them at all to me.

Contrast that with bright spots from Power:

I'm living in that 21st Century, doing something mean to it
Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it
Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it
I guess every superhero need his theme music
No one man should have all that power

Much more interesting statements, framing "screams from the haters" as his "superhero theme music." "Doing something mean" to the 21st century, etc.

And this next section is brilliant:

My furs is Mongolian, my ice brought the goalies in
And I embody every characteristic of the egotistic
He knows, he's so fricking gifted
I just needed time alone with my own thoughts
Got treasures in my mind but couldn't open up my own vault
My childlike creativity, purity and honesty
Is honestly being crowded by these grown thoughts
Reality is catching up with me
Taking my inner child, I'm fighting for custody
With these responsibilities that they entrusted me
As I look down at my diamond encrusted piece

Suggesting conclusions and placing certain phrases in novel contexts, like "inner child fighting for custody," "treasures in my own mind but couldn't open up my own vault," etc. Pronouncing diamond using three syllables so that "encrusted" will rhythmically mirror "entrusted" exactly.

If everything he wrote was like this, I would get it.

But I don't get what's great about the first set of lyrics posted.

And since music is 3-4 elements (rhythm, melody, harmony, and possibly lyrics) and rap only uses 2 of those elements (rhythm and lyrics), and never uses odd time signature or anything other than 4/4 time really for rhythm, the lyrics better be exceptional, not average vanilla.
