I wonder how such claims would sit with blacks and Hispanics, who are quite more convicted in their religion than whites are, and identify with Christianity in greater percentages.

American Christians mostly just claim it as conveneince. 99% of the "Christians" I know don't read the bible and other than going to church Sunday morning aren't any different in their behavior than I am.
