How was it a bad investment? I obtained it for credit bid on the tax lien certificates I held on the property. I sold it for 15% under market value and still made a sizable profit.

Several in this thread have made reference to sovcits but I must admit I'm at a loss as to the connection between hating HOAs and being a sovcit.

What does sovereign citizen stuff have to do with a private entity like an HOA? You all act like I've claimed that I'm not subject to the laws of the city and county.

Exactly. It's absolutely nonsensical.

You entered into a contract of your own free will. Why do think you should not have to follow it?

HOA represent standards of living. If you don’t like your HOA maybe you in the wrong neighborhood. If you move in because you like the neighborhood then don’t screw it up by being difficult.

My daughter is in a high school sorority. This year some Karen let her daughter join but has now threatened lawsuits if they don’t change the initiation week traditions. The girls couldn’t shave and had to wear different shirts etc. They had to refer to members as Ms. So and So. She claimed it was hazing. Well it is a well known tradition. If she didn’t like then don’t join. But hell no she had to join and screw it up for everyone.

That’s what people who try to fight the HOA are like.

I hate HOAs but I don't think they need to be banned. I think the fundamental problem with HOAs is the extremely wide latitude they are afforded in most states to act as quasi-governmental entities with outsized authority. The recourse to out of control HOAs is almost non-existent.

Jesus you are all woefully ignorant or you are being intentionally obtuse. Contracts are voided all the time in court for various reasons.

What has your HOA done that is outside their authority of enforcing the CC&Rs *you* agreed to when you purchased the property?

It's not my fault you obviously didn't pay a bit of attention to what you were signing.

I compare them to people who buy property adjacent to an airport, and then complain about the noise

There are videos on YouTube of homeowners trying to do just that and the board called the police to send them all home. You think of it as a lifetime appointment.

Having actually served on an HOA board(oh my God, I was nuts), I can tell you that it is not nearly so simple.

In our HOA, we had over 600 homes yet, it was not uncommon to hold elections with fewer than 150 votes. You had a couple of people who basically could get elected with 30 good friends in the neighborhood.

And, these people view the HOA as their own little fiefdom.

Unlike the OP, I do not oppose the general concept of HOAs but trust me, they can go off the fricking rails right quick.

You spam this site with anti-police BS constantly. Now you’ve added HOAs that charge you assessments to your personal crusade. This is exactly the garbage that the sovereign citizens spout when they have any interaction with a person of authority.
